It's been a tumultuous year for King Charles , as the head of the royal family and Kate Middleton have both been fighting cancer.

Still, a recent pic of the monarch fulfilling his public duties in Scotland shows that he's managing to keep a positive attitude.

In a photo taken on Friday, Sept. 20, King Charles joined Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner for a discussion with the Scottish Violence Reduction Unit on Youth Opportunities at Dumfries House in Cumnock, Scotland—and he seemed to be having the time of his life. Seated at a table with a pile of papers in front of him, Charles looked like he was laughing at something especially humorous.

Dumfries House is the headquarters of The King's Foundation, a charity founded by the King as the Prince of Wales in 1990, and he was there to hear from charities working across the United Kingdom.

Charles was in similarly good spirits earlier this month when he participated in a group hug with New Zealand's Black Ferns, a women's rugby team, who attended a reception at Buckingham Palace before their game against the English women's team on Saturday, Sept. 14.

Though Charles had to admit that the giant embrace was "like being flattened by a scrum," he also made a point of telling the players that he "much appreciated this chance to meet you, and to have such a warm hug," adding that it was "very healing."

Buckingham Palace hasn't revealed many details about the king's health , but Charles told a reporter in August that he was "not too bad."

Earlier this month, the Princess of Wales revealed in a video message that she is no longer undergoing chemotherapy treatment, instead, “Doing what I can to stay cancer free is now my focus.”
