Saturday Night Live cranks out fresh, topical comedic material each weekend, often mining the previous week’s cultural news, political events and viral moments as inspiration for comedic sketches, digital shorts and Weekend Update segments. However, the NBC franchise is also known for its memorable recurring skits. From Debbie Downer and Mary Katherine Gallagher to Mister Robinson and Stefon, it’s always a delight when SNL brings back beloved bits to make us crack up again and again, deepening the legacy and lore of its original characters.

With the comedy series’ historic 50th season kicking off on Saturday, Sept. 28, it seems likely we'll see the return of some fan favorites. At least we hope so! Here are five iconic skits that we’d love to see return for Saturday Night Live Season 50.

Iconic sketches we want to see return for Saturday Night Live Season 50

    Washington’s Dream

The NBC powers that be have already announced that stand-up comic and Season 49 host Nate Bargatze will be returning to Studio 8H this season for his second gig as a guest host, which has us wishing for a recurrence of “Washington’s Dream.” The rightfully lauded skit featured Bargatze as the titular American president alongside a troop of Revolutionary War soldiers (played by Kenan Thompson , Mikey Day , Bowen Yang and James Austin Johnson ). Washington tries to pump up morale among the dejected freedom fighters by reminding them that they’re working towards a new way of life, one that is hilariously, confusingly different from the British Monarchy they’re aiming to leave behind. It seems likely that Washington could return with an equally lame way of boosting morale.

    Moulin Rouge

Sure, pop songstress Ariana Grande and SNL cast member Bowen Yang already tackled the Baz Luhrmann-directed jukebox musical Moulin Rouge when Grande hosted Saturday Night Live last season. However, given that the “Eternal Sunshine” crooner is coming back to host again in Season 50, and she and Yang will be promoting the big Wicked movie adaptation coming out this November, we’d love to see another goofy musical spoof between these two. The original skit had Grande and Yang full-blown breaking as Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor ’s characters, performing the film’s famed “Elephant Love Medley” as if Luhrmann hadn’t been able to secure the copious song rights — think a whole lot of “Wonderwall” and “Happy Birthday.”

    Airport Sushi

A member of the elite Five Timers Club — i.e. those celebrities who have been asked back to host Saturday Night Live at least five times — comedian John Mulaney will play host on the NBC sketch-comedy series for the sixth time on Nov. 2. Mulaney, of course, worked as a writer for the show from 2008 to 2013 and was the mastermind behind plenty of memorable sketches and characters, including co-creating the character of Stefon. But for his Season 50 appearance, it would be a kick to see the return of Mulaney’s most delightfully absurd musical numbers like “Diner Lobster,” “Bodega Bathroom” or “Airport Sushi” — the latter featured the comic hilariously singing about the horrors of buying bad sushi at LaGuardia alongside the likes of Jake Gyllenhaal and David Byrne .

    ABBA Christmas

We don’t yet know who will be hosting the annual holiday edition of Season 50. As of press time, NBC has only announced guest hosts through the November 2nd show, which will be emceed by John Mulaney. Whoever it is though, we hope that they’ll get the chance to don silly 1970s wigs and sparkly disco costumes in yet another ABBA-themed holiday parody alongside cast member Bowen Yang and alum Maya Rudolph , who will be back regularly appearing on SNL this upcoming season to reprise her Emmy-winning impression of presidential candidate Kamala Harris .

    Beavis and Butt-head

Season 49’s prosthetic-heavy appearance by host Ryan Gosling and cast member Mikey Day as two random guys who just happen to strongly resemble the iconically stupid duo of Beavis and Butt-head was one of the funniest, most viral sketches in recent memory. (Even co-star Heidi Gardner couldn’t keep it together during the laugh-out-loud skit.) While it’s unclear whether Gosling will be popping into Studio 8H for Season 50, if he did, we hope it’ll be during Michael Keaton ’s upcoming guest spot on Oct. 19 — just think, Beavis, Butt-head and Beetlejuice? Comedy gold!
