At the end of September, American country music icon and actor Kris Kristofferson died at 88. As many friends and colleagues shared sweet messages about the late artist, fellow country star Tim McGraw chimed in with a special tribute of his own.

McGraw took to Instagram on Sept. 30 to share a photo of himself and Kristofferson taken in 2013, at Keith Urban's fourth annual We're All For The Hall benefit concert. In the snap, McGraw appeared to be talking about something as Kristofferson looked on with a bright smile.

The "Don't Take The Girl" singer wrote alongside the nostalgic photo, "Another legend lost…. Honored to have witnessed the great @kristofferson."

Fans joined in to pay tribute to Kristofferson, with kind comments like, "Sad tonight. 🥺 One of greatest songwriters of all time," and, "He was a great singer, one of my favourites. He will be so missed."

"A legendary singer, songwriter, and actor. May he rest in the eternal glow of the stars 🌟," said a third.

A different fan praised Kristofferson's character, writing, "RIP I remember when he stood up for Sinead O’Connor . Classy men always stand up for women. Glad you have too."

The comment referenced McGraw's recent political statement that got a lot of attention when he wished his wife Faith Hill a happy birthday as he said, "Let's honor the women in our lives with respect and make sure that we fight for their rights right alongside them!"

In 1992, Kristofferson supported Sinéad O’Connor after she was booed on stage following a Saturday Night Live appearance in which she called out the Catholic Church amid claims of rampant abuse and coverup.

Kristofferson died in Maui, Hawaii, with his family, and no cause of death has been shared. He was a prominent singer-songwriter and actor, earning many awards throughout his career, including multiple Grammys and a Golden Globe for his performance in 1976's A Star Is Born opposite Barbra Streisand .
