As the series finale of Blue Bloods approaches, star Tom Selleck said he is feeling “kind of frustrated” that the show is ending.

During a recent interview with TV Insider that was published on Thursday, Oct. 3, the 79-year-old actor—who has played New York City Police Commissioner Frank Reagan on the CBS police procedural since 2010—suggested the “wildly successful” show was canceled needlessly.

While clarifying his “frustration,” the Magnum, P.I. alum explained, “the show was always taken for granted because it performed from the get-go.” That early success continued despite the show airing on Fridays during what Selleck described as “the worst time slot.”

Though Selleck told the publication he doesn’t “believe in holding grudges,” he seemed amazed by the idea that a show like Blue Bloods , which he said could “guarantee you winning Friday night for the next 15 years,” will soon stop airing. It will “take a long time” for him to come to terms with the reality of the situation, he added, later identifying his co-stars as the part of Blue Bloods that he expects to miss the most.

The actors Selleck worked with are “as close as the Reagan family and the characters that they play,” he said during the interview before acknowledging that the closeness he described was not the case on many other TV shows. “It’s something for everybody to hang their hats on and be proud of,” he said.

CBS announced its decision to pull the plug on its popular crime drama at the conclusion of Season 14 , the first part of which aired earlier this year. Eight episodes of the show remain, with the second part of Season 14 scheduled to air on Friday, Oct. 18. Episodes will air Fridays at 10 p.m. ET/PT until the series finale in early December.

Though the show’s end was announced nearly a year ago, CBS Studios President David Stapf left the door open for a potential spinoff series, telling TV Insider that “endless possibilities” exist.
