Eight months after King Charles III told the world that he is battling cancer , new details have emerged about a major lifestyle change he initiated in the wake of his diagnosis.

As fans of the royal family may know, the 75-year-old monarch had a lifelong tendency of eating healthy food but skipping midday meals. He viewed lunch as a “luxury” he could not afford due to his hectic schedule, according to an unnamed source quoted in The Daily Mail .

That habit now appears to have changed. As the British tabloid reported on Saturday, Oct. 5, the king recently began eating “a snack” in the middle of the day at the urging of Queen Camilla and his medical team. The lifestyle change was made with “some reluctance,” the source said.

“He now eats half an avocado to sustain him through the day,” they explained, adding that getting nutrition at that time of day is “important” for people who are, as the king is, facing a serious health battle.

The superfood midday snack marks an upbeat development for the king, who has faced a tumultuous year as both he and his daughter-in-law, Kate Middleton , battled cancer. Buckingham Palace revealed in early February that medical professionals “identified a form of cancer” when King Charles underwent treatment for an enlarged prostate. Though palace officials did not specify which type of cancer the king was battling, they noted it was “a separate issue of concern” from the enlarged prostate. He began treatment on Feb. 5.

Less than two months later, Prince William’s wife revealed her own battle with cancer in a video update shared on social media. Though the Princess of Wales did not disclose her cancer type, she revealed in early September that she had already completed chemotherapy and was focusing on staying “cancer free.”
