Buckle up, 9-1-1 fans! Creators Ryan Murphy and Tim Minear have announced a new spinoff for the drama.

With the original 9-1-1 having just premiered its eighth season, it’s not surprising that another spinoff is in the works . 9-1-1 already spawned spinoff 9-1-1: Lone Star, which is currently airing its fifth and final season. Producers must believe the dedicated 9-1-1 fanbase is hungry for another team of emergency responders.

Here’s everything we know so far about the new 9-1-1 spinoff, including where it might be set, when it could air and more.

What is the release date for the new 9-1-1 spinoff show?

Details are slow in coming about the new 9-1-1 show, as it was just announced on Oct. 1, 2024. However, Murphy told Variety that “we hope to get on the air next fall.”

That means viewers may be able to watch the next 9-1-1 as soon as September 2025, and with 9-1-1: Lone Star wrapping up, there's an open slot in the schedule waiting for it.

What do we know about the new 9-1-1 spinoff show?

Short answer: not much. The creators haven’t revealed the setting for the new 9-1-1 or if there will be any distinct differences from the original show or Lone Star . So far, we don’t even know the show’s name.

“[...] We’re going to launch a new show in a new city that I can’t name, but it’s fun,” Murphy said in his Variety interview. “ 9-1-1 moved to ABC and suddenly became, I think, the biggest show on Thursday night. They obviously have an appetite for that, so we’re going to give them another one that I really love.”

Murphy’s referencing 9-1-1 ’s move from Fox to ABC, where it continues to thrive today. It’s also been a frontrunner on the Hulu Top 15 in recent weeks, so you don’t need cable to follow along.

Where will be the new 9-1-1 spinoff be set?

That's the multi-million-dollar question about this point. In their article on the new spinoff, Deadline posits that the new addition to the franchise could take place in Las Vegas. That is after all where the original CSI was set. New York City also seems to be another popular option, especially given that both the original LA-based show and the Austin-based Lone Star are not on the east coast. Ryan Murphy loves filming in New Orleans , so that's a potential option as is Atlanta, which is notoriously inexpensive to film in.

However, if you're thinking about potential 9-1-1 calls and plot points that haven't been explored yet, it seems like the new series would benefit from a colder climate and potential snow-related mishaps. For that reason, Denver, Boston or Detroit could all be strong settings. Presumably the show's location will be announced soon though if they're eying a 2025 release date.

    9-1-1 spinoff cast

Along with the setting, the cast of the new 9-1-1 is a mystery.

The original show is full of familiar faces, like Angela Bassett , Peter Krause and Jennifer Love Hewitt . Lone Star ’s cast isn’t quite as stacked but features Rob Lowe as the big-ticket name at its head. So it makes sense that creators will want to attach at least one A-lister to the new spinoff, as that’s worked well for them before.

How to watch the 9-1-1 spinoff

The 9-1-1 spinoff will air on ABC, although no date or time has yet been set. ABC shows typically stream on Hulu the following day, so you'll likely be able to watch the new show there as well.

How many seasons of 9-1-1 are there?

9-1-1 is currently on its eighth season, which kicked off on Sept. 26, 2024. Considering how many cop/firefighter/doctor-type shows have been put out there, that’s a pretty impressive run. 9-1-1 specifically combines several of these genres to include all first responders, and viewers get to see dispatchers and EMTs, too.

Its first six seasons aired on Fox before the show switched over to ABC. ABC is also the network that the new spinoff will air on, although 9-1-1: Lone Star premiered on Fox and has stayed there through its five season run.

Why was 9-1-1: Lone Star canceled?

9-1-1: Lone Star is airing its fifth and final season now on Fox. The show first aired in 2020 as a spinoff of 9-1-1 . While the original is set in Los Angeles, Lone Star follows first responders in the city of Austin, Texas.

According to Ryan Murphy, Lone Star was canceled because “the financials just didn’t work. It’s a Disney company that was on a Fox network, and it just was never going to work. And we had a long run of it.”

Rob Lowe, who stars in Lone Star , told Variety in August that the cast knew it would be the last season going into it. “We wanted to really show everybody what is still possible in network television if people have the appetite to do it,” he said. “It feels like it’s probably the end of an era of a certain type—well, it doesn’t feel like it. It is the end of an era of a certain type of show we once had an opportunity to make, and I think they’re great. We wanted to go out making our case for the value of shows like that, and I think we did a really good job. The stories that we were able to tell on a weekly basis in terms of the scope and scale—that’s probably the thing I’m the most proud of. They were truly like mini-movies every week.”
