    Columbus Day, or Indigenous Peoples' Day, is coming up on October 14 this year. Every year, Columbus Day/Indigenous Peoples' Day is recognized in the United States on the second Monday of October. So, you might be wondering— what's open and closed on Columbus Day and Indigenous Peoples' Day?

    Columbus Day commemorates Christopher Columbus' arrival to America, but has long been a controversial holiday. Indigenous Peoples' Day began as a counter-celebration to Columbus Day, honoring Indigenous Peoples' histories and cultures.

    Since it is one of 11 federal holidays, most banks and government offices will be closed on Monday. But, luckily many major retailers and restaurants will remain open, operating under normal hours. Keep reading to discover what's open and closed on Columbus Day and Indigenous Peoples' Day.

    Are Banks Open on Columbus Day, Indigenous Peoples' Day?

    Columbus Day and Indigenous Peoples' Day are Federal Reserve bank holidays, so most banks will be closed.

    Per their websites, Bank of America, Citibank, Capital One, Truist and Wells Fargo branch locations will all be closed on Monday.

    Most Chase and TD Bank branch locations will remain open, though Chase notes that Monday will be treated as a holiday for purposes of online transactions.

    Is the Post Office Closed on Columbus Day, Indigenous Peoples' Day?

    The United States Postal Service (USPS) is closed on Columbus Day and Indigenous Peoples' Day. There will be no mail delivery, caller service or PO Box services operating on Monday—so, get to the post office while you can!

    Government Offices

    Since Columbus Day and Indigenous Peoples' Day is a federal holiday, all non-essential federal, state and local government offices will be closed. This includes government buildings like the DMV, libraries, courts and other government-operated offices.

    Stores and Restaurants Open on Columbus Day, Indigenous Peoples' Day

    Just because it's a federal holiday doesn't mean you want to stay inside all day! The good news is that many stores and restaurants will remain open on Columbus Day and Indigenous Peoples' Day.

    All of your favorite retail stores like Target, Walmart, T.J. Maxx and CVS will be open. If you usually do your grocery shopping on Mondays, fret not. Grocery stores like Whole Foods, Kroger, Aldi, Safeway and Trader Joe's will be open.

    Need a bite to eat? Don't feel like cooking? Popular restaurants, like Chick-fil-A, Starbucks, Chipotle, McDonald's and Chili's will be open on Monday.

    However, check with your local stores and restaurants for any adjusted hours.
