Liam Payne , one of the former members of the boy band One Direction, has died. He was 31 years old.
The English singer is said to have died after falling from the third-floor balcony of his hotel room in Buenos Aires, Argentina, according to state police.
ABC News was among the first to confirm the news.
Several eyewitnesses told the Daily Mail that the incident occurred at the CasaSur Palmero Hotel in the Argentinian capital shortly after 5 p.m. local time on the evening of Wednesday, Oct. 16. He was believed to have been traveling with his girlfriend, Kate Cassidy .
According to TMZ , before Payne fell, a 911 call was made by someone at the hotel to report an "aggressive" male. The outlet also reported that several sources on the scene claimed it was Payne who had been acting erratically in the lobby.

Paramedics with the Emergency Medical Attention System (SAME) confirmed Payne's death shortly after arriving on the scene, according to Newsweek . The head of SAME, Alberto Crescenti , claimed that Payne fell from approximately 13 or 14 meters (around 43 to 46 feet) and was discovered with injuries that were "incompatible with life."
"We were alerted via 911 about a person in the internal courtyard of the Casa Sur hotel," Crescenti told the press, per Newsweek 's report. "By the time our team arrived, the man had already passed. Unfortunately, his injuries were fatal, and there was no possibility of resuscitation."
Payne was known for being one of the five singers in the popular X Factor -created boy band One Direction, which also included Harry Styles , Niall Horan , Zayn Malik and Louis Tomlinson .
The group, formed in 2010, is known for making hit songs like "What Makes You Beautiful," "Night Changes," and "Best Song Ever" before the band members went their separate ways in 2016.
Along with his singing career, Payne was also the father of 7-year-old son Bear Grey Payne , who the singer welcomed with ex-girlfriend Cheryl Cole in March 2017.
In addition to his son, Payne is survived by his parents, Karen and Geoff Payne , as well as siblings Nicola and Ruth Payne .
