Holland Lop Rabbit's Huge Hops for His First Time in a Sand Bath Have Olympians Quaking

If you didn't want a bunny when you were little, you didn't really live. Most of us never ended up getting the bunnies we wanted (and that's probably for the best), but some people grow up to get bunnies of their own, and we live vicariously through them.

On Saturday, August 3rd, one bunny mom set up a fun sand bath activity for her Holland Lop. It was his first time ever, and it's safe to say he had no idea what to do, but he definitely had a good time:

The Holland Loppies don't get to do this very often, so this was really special. As is made clear by these massive jumps.

There are 3 bunnies in this family: Fluffy, Flower, and the star of this video, FeiFei. He's the only boy, so he already gets to feel special a lot, but this little sand bath activity is the most special of all. Feifei is the only one who got to do it, as far as we know, but that's okay.

It was just an added activity: these bunnies keep each other company, and they free-roam, which means they're able to find lots of natural enrichment opportunities around their home. Letting bunnies free roam actually is not as weird as it sounds: they're pretty big so they don't get lost easily, and they can be litter trained. They're kind of like cats!

Are Sand Baths Good for Rabbits?

Sand baths may seem counterintuitive to keeping clean, since the point is to eliminate dust, but many use them for all different kinds of rodents. They're definitely an interesting enrichment activity; it's not a texture they experience a lot.

The dust used in a proper sand bath is very fine and typically consists of a few different materials, including sand, wood shavings, herbs, and more. Rabbits have sensitive lungs and should avoid baths with fine dust or sand to avoid inhaling or ingesting it, which could cause internal blockages. Instead, you can give your rabbit a "bath" in pet-safe, untreated top soil for the same experience.

Rabbits are self-grooming animals: they lick themselves to keep clean and don't usually need a "real" bath unless something has happened. Unlike chinchillas who need sand/dust baths for their incredibly dense fur, rabbits typically have no problem cleaning even the inner parts of their coats on their own.

FeiFei is just fine, and going forward, his mom will adjust his "bath" based on the safest materials for him. He'll love it just as much, and his hops will be just as big. He's coming for the gold!
