Golden Retriever Abruptly Ends Walk and the Reason Is Priceless

I always wonder exactly what my dog remembers — and for how long. After all, most of our days are based on her routine, so with that much repetition, I'm never surprised that she knows exactly when to eat, when to go to bed at night, when she can expect her humans to be home and away. But when it comes to my interactions with her, what does she commit to her little doggie memory? Does she remember the time she snuggled up to me when I was really sick and offered comfort I really needed? Does she remember that I promised her we'd play in the yard after I finish work for the day when I fed her breakfast this morning?

We may never know everything about the way dogs' brains work, but we may have a bit of an insight into their memory — or at least this dog's memory — after seeing this TikTok video.

On Monday, August 5, @daisythegoldiee took to Instagram to share this sweet video of her Golden Retriever pup, Daisy, and something wild that happened while they were out on a walk.

They were out enjoying the day and everything was fine, until five minutes into it, she made a sudden stop and started heading for home.

"I thought she was rushing home because it was hot out. Girl never walks this fast. She didn't even stop to say hi to our neighbors!" Daisy's mom wrote on the video.

Once she got home, she rushed right for the kitchen and right to where cooked chicken was waiting on the counter — chicken that her mom had promised she could have after her walk. I guess she thought chicken time would come faster if the walk ended faster!

Unfortunately, she was wrong; her dad was still out with her sis (another Golden Retriever) and she had to wait to have chicken until they returned. Still, it's hilarious that she remembered!

    How Much Do Dogs Remember?

According to PetMD, studies indicate that dogs actually do have pretty good memories , and their long term memory is good enough that they can remember how to do a trick they haven't done in years.

When it comes to short term memory — the kind that allows them to remember they were promised chicken after their walk earlier that day — it's all about their associative memory. They know if it's dark, they're probably going to bed soon. They know if you said there would be chicken after a walk and you say the word walk again, the chicken will be theirs to enjoy soon!

It's pretty amazing how much is going on in their brains... and let this be a lesson that you should never break a promise you make to your dogs, especially if it involves food.

This seems more about comprehension than memory. Maple obviously understands English!!!
