In the 1950's, Shari Lewis, a Peabody-winning American ventriloquist, puppeteer,  television show host, dancer, children's entertainer, singer, actress, author, and symphony conductor appeared with a sock puppet named Lamb Chop on The Captain Kangaroo show. The beloved Lamb Chop would then go on to have her own show with Lewis in the 1960's called The Shari Lewis Show . Jump ahead to 1992, and Lamb Chop and Lewis began their own PBS children's show, Lamb Chop's Play-Along , an Emmy Award winner for five consecutive years.

If you’re of a certain age, you might fondly recall this adorable puppet and the incredibly talented Lewis keeping you company in front of your television. And if you’re a dog owner, there’s a good chance your pup has their very own ‘Lamby’ in their toy basket. This modern take on the beloved children’s TV character has become one of the best-selling dog toys of all time.

ParadePets spoke with Multipet , the dog toy brand who sells Lamb Chop toys, all about this best-selling pet toy.

ParadePets: How did Lamb Chop go from being a beloved Captain Kangaroo character to a pet toy?

Multipet: Multipet, having many nostalgic licenses already, was offered the license to Lamb Chop in 2008 and felt it would be a good fit – they never imagined at the time that it would turn into America’s best-selling plush dog toy!

After Lewis sadly passed in 1998, her daughter, the super talented producer and writer Mallory Lewis, began to perform with the adorable Lamb Chop.

In the above video, sweet Lamby says she loves seeing people love her and wanting to see them share the love of her with her fur babies. On the other hand, she does not enjoy seeing her head chewed off.

ParadePets: How many Lamb Chops are sold per year?

    Multipet: Several million

ParadePets: Why do you think pups love Lamb Chop so much?

Multipet: Dogs seem to identify Lamb Chop more like a “baby” rather than just another chew toy. They love the shape of the toy as it is easy to carry, and when tested, they will often pick a Lamb Chop out of a pile of different toys.

There are so many social media videos of pets loving their Lamb Chop stuffies , and entire Reddit threads devoted to people discussing why their pets love this toy the most of all.

One user explained it like this:
