Life as a shelter cat certainly isn't easy. Rather than spending your days living with a family who provides love, attention, and other basic essentials for a happy and healthy kitty life, they're living in a kennel — not exactly known as the most comfortable place in the world. Those who foster cats who are waiting to find their forever homes really are making a difference in the lives of homeless animals; providing a family to a cat who needs one while knowing you'll have to say goodbye someday is such a selfless thing to do.

It has to be even harder for shelter cats who are in the senior phase of their lives and potentially spending the rest of their days without knowing the love of a family. But the mom in this video really stepped up to make this senior cat's last months (or longer) much more special.

On Thursday, August 15, 2024, @catladybrittany shared this sweet video on TikTok of the senior cat, Buttons, she adopted knowing that they wouldn't get to spend very much time together at all. Still, just seeing how happy Buttons is here is proof that she's doing such a beautiful thing for this kitty.

"POV: When you adopt the 20 year old senior cat from the shelter who is in need of hospice care for her remaining days," she wrote in the video.

It's easy to see just how much Buttons appreciates Brittany from the way she's nuzzling her face, and the feeling certainly seems to be mutual as far as I can tell!

In another video , Brittany mentioned that Buttons is deaf and has special needs, so it's even sweeter that she's found a home for the rest of her life.

In a comment, she explained why she wanted to start adopting senior cats : "My soul cat passed almost 2 years ago, but led my heart to doing this for other seniors."

There's no doubt that her kitty who is no longer with her would love to know what she's been able to do for other cats.

    Providing Hospice Homes for Cats

While many people may not know about it, being a "hospice foster" parent to a cat actually is something you can do — though of course, it will be very different from the way you've cared for younger cats before.

According to one cat website, Paws and Effect, being a hospice foster means that you are taking In a cat who is either very old or who has a terminal illness. The shelter will pay for the veterinary costs, but you will be the one to take them to vet visits and will be responsible for their daily care.

If you're interested, a good place to start is by contacting local animal shelters to see if there's a need for this kind of foster parent.

There's no denying the heartbreak that comes with stepping into a role like this, but there's also no denying what a massive difference it can make for a cat facing the end of their life. Every cat deserves to know true love and comfort, even if it's not until later in their journey.
