Maine coons are not your average cat. Besides their massive size and outgoing personalities, they are also unexpectedly gentle. While this may be hard to comprehend for a feline once known for pest control, it will be easier to believe after seeing this unusual interaction.

The aggressor in this scenario was a tiny field mouse, and this giant Maine Coon cat's response was one no one would expect. See how this kitty handled her adversary in this extraordinary video from July 25:

What a moment to catch on camera! Beautiful Tiara’s (@ mainecoonqueens ) mom reveals she thinks this might be the most interesting thing she’s ever recorded, and I think it’s one of the most captivating I’ve ever seen. Even though I’ve had a Maine Coon, and know how exceptionally gentle they can be, they are still cats. So, when a mouse aggressively attacks them, it would be fair for them to take down their foe, especially after this little field mouse may not have one but two attempts to fight. While she may have raised her paw, she soon realized she was in charge and compassionately spared this tiny life. Although we may never know why she showed mercy, witnessing an animal making a more kindhearted decision than some humans is fascinating.

Do Maine Coon Have Strong Hunting Instincts?

Although it’s hard to believe after seeing Tiara with his mouse, they do. They were initially bred in the harsh climate of New England, where their hunting abilitie s were valued for keeping rodent numbers in check on farms and ships. Maine Coons are natural hunters with strong reflexes and a keen sense of smell, which makes them great at tracking and catching prey. If they are well-fed and not hungry, or because of their high intelligence, they may understand that playing with the mouse can be more fun than eliminating it.

People shared their theories on this cat’s unexpected decision. Viewer @luluhv responded, “That mouse is so brave or really unaware of the risks. Maybe she smelled, so she decided, I am not touching you, disgusting mouse.” That seems like logical reasoning. Viewer @ktannlove remarked, “Mouse said not today, carnivore!! Tiara said It’s okay, little gangster. I only come in peace.” That sounds about right. Viewer @kate_and_caesar responded, “Caesar never hurts any of the animals he brings inside to play with.” My mom also has a Ragdoll who enjoys catching mice and bringing them to her alive, but this was on another level.

After seeing this, there’s no question about the emotional intelligence a Maine coon possesses. It makes you wonder what else they ponder each day.
