There are few things more devastating than losing a cat, but it happens all the time — and unfortunately, I know the feeling firsthand. It's been years since my cat, Flynn, escaped when a door blew open in our house during a storm and he got spooked, and despite trying to track him down for weeks, he was never found. Those were some of the hardest weeks I've ever had, and I still think about him and hope that he ultimately found a home and was taken in by someone well meaning who may have thought he was a stray.

But many times, these stories of lost pets do have a happy ending, and the video below is one of them. Warning: If you're feeling emotional, you might want to grab some tissues before hitting play, because this moment is a tearjerker!

This #CheckTheChip Day, be sure to microchip your pets, register it, and keep your contact info up-to-date. We want all pets to be reunited with their family if they go missing, just like Nanja 🥹✨❤️

The San Francisco SPCA shared this footage on TikTok on Thursday, August 15. Years after this tabby cat, whose name is Nanja, went missing, he was reunited with his mom — and even after all of that time apart, it's clear that he knew exactly who she is.

His mom was in tears when she saw Nanja for the first time, and he immediately came over for pets and cuddles. Thanks to the fact that Nanja was microchipped, the SPCA was able to bring these two back together again.

"On Valentine's Day 2024, a cat came in through our trap-neuter-release program,"  the SPCA explained in the video. "This thought to be feral cat had a microchip. We were able to contact Nanja's owner and she came right away."

This is the sweetest moment, and it's nothing short of magic that they were able to reunite after years apart like this.

    More About Microchipping Your Cats

Nanja's mom was able to be found because she had him microchipped before he was missing. If you haven't already had your cats chipped, it could be a good thing to do in case anything like this should happen. It'll get you one step closer to finding your missing cat .

In case you're not familiar, the microchip is a small chip the size of a grain of rice that is implanted in a pet and contains a code. When you have the procedure done, you can register the chip online and create a profile with your contact information. When the code is read by a scanner, it will lead to your information so your cat can be reunited with you. For that reason, it's important to regularly update your microchip registration with your accurate contact info.

As the American Veterinary Medical Association points out, implanting the chip isn't any more painful for cats than receiving an injection ; it's implanted with a hypodermic needle.

It's always better to prepare for the worst and hope that you never need those plans you put in place, and this is one of those times. If your cat ever gets lost, you will be just as thankful for the microchip as the cat mom in this video is.
