A "spicy" cat named Leo has found himself at a shelter, and the workers didn't hold back anything with the adoption write up they crafted for him.

On August 13, 2024, Prairie Paws Animal Shelter in Ottawa, Kansas, shared an adoption write up for a new cat that came into their care, and Leo sounds like quite the cat. Take a look!

On Facebook, the shelter shared several photos of Leo, a cute orange and white cat , and included some very honest details about his temperament.

" Looking for a lap cat ? Keep looking. Need a cuddle bug? Not me. Want a sweet little ray of sunshine? Think again," the shelter began the write up.

"Meet Leo. He’s sweet, but he’s spicy. He’s calm then he’s feisty. Our man Leo isn’t sure exactly what he’s feeling usually,' the blurb continued.

The shelter describes Leo as being nice one second and not the next, adding that he can "be a ray of sunshine…and the thunderstorm. He needs someone who understands his mood swings and loves him anyways."

Leo sounds like a sweet cat who has a very short fuse. "One second he’s purring, and the next he’s angry. He’ll seek attention from you but growl once you go to pet him. He’s sure to keep you on your toes," the Prairie Paws Animal Shelter adds.

The shelter isn't being mean; they're just being candid, and that's important so potential new cat parents know what they're getting into and have the needed support in place. Shelters also need to make recommendations on the type of home environment that may be best for cats with a similar temperament.

"Leo would do best in a home where he is the only pet (he’s a bully)….probably best in a home without small children as well (he shows no mercy as anything small is viewed as a wrestling opponent)," the shelter explained.

"Life is short, spice it up. Adopt Leo. We love Leo and we know someone out there will too."

In the comments of the post, people had really sweet things to say about Leo.

One wrote, "Love the honest description! No doubt someone is looking for this exact soul cat!"

Another, "Oh he is handsome, he even looks like he has a mustache. I hope he finds his forever home. I already have a cat that looks and acts just like him."

Someone else shared, "A friend of mine has a cat like that. She's the kind of cat that prefers humans over other cats."

One shared, "I grew up with a mean one like him. This brings back memories and a smile!!!"

Some Cats Are Grumpy, Especially Shelter Cats, but You Can Help

No one wants to hang out with someone who doesn't want to hang out with you, and that's true for cats sometimes. Like Leo, some cats can be very grumpy, which is understandable if you have more details on their story, which some shelter cats have really been through some challenging times. But if you have a grumpy cat and you need to gain their trust, there are some things that you can do.

According to the Cat & Dog Clinic of Bellevue , the first thing you should do if you have a miserable or feisty cat is take it for a full exam at the veterinarian. Sometimes, cats can have a health issue that's got them feeling down, and getting them feeling better can turn their mood around.

But if your cat has a clean bill of health, there are some things you can control that might help slowly win the trust of your grumpy cat.

One good step is to look at their environment. Do they have a space that is just for them? "Cats can be quite jealous and territorial," the vets explain. "If you have other pets, make sure that they are all getting equal attention and don’t have to compete for resources, such as food, water, litterboxes, or lap space."

Another good tip is to play with your cat or provide other forms of entertainment. Playing with them with a wand toy or something will be great for bonding because they'll start associating you with toys without you having to be super close to them. It might also help burn off some of their energy, which could also calm them down.

"Never force attention on a cat! If Fluffy doesn’t want to be picked up, just let her be," the Cat & Dog Clinic of Bellevue shares.
