Big dogs can be intimidating to anyone who isn’t familiar with them. However, most are gentle giants that understand their size and how to protect those around them. This is especially true with small children or older adults.

My large dogs have always shown gentleness and restraint around those who may be more fragile. Like this gorgeous Newfoundland, who ensures grandma is always safe walking with him.

Check out this well-mannered pup on his daily stroll in this video from July 29:

There is so much we can learn from these two. Although the experts continually tell us that walking helps to keep us young, this grandmother is proof. It’s hard to believe she’s 94 and still wants to go out to walk her grand dog. Her granddaughter tells us she thinks it helps to keep her young, and who are we to argue with this seemingly indisputable fact? Chewy (@ chewythenewfoundland ) is the perfect gentleman, walking calmly beside and around her, ensuring she is always in the lead and safe. What a good boy! While it can sometimes be hard to train dogs to heel when they’re young, especially when they don’t want to listen, this is the perfect example of why putting in the effort pays off. Patience is key in dog training, and the results are always worth it.

Tips for Training Proper Leash Behaviors

    1. Experts recommend beginning leash training in an enclosed area whenever possible.

    2. Using a loose collar, begin walking. If the dog pulls, stop and then shift directions.

    3. When your dog follows your lead, give them immediate praise and treats for the behavior you wish to see.

    4. Keep your dog engaged by checking in with them and occasionally giving them treats to keep them focused on you.

People were impressed by this precious pair. Viewer @newfie.boys responded, “They each encompass a mutual ability that keeps each other spry. It’s the most endearing love.” It truly is. Viewer @cosmobeanz remarked, “My absolute favorite about pets is that they always know when to be more gentle. They figure it out eventually. I love them.” They seem to possess a deep understanding, often more than humans give them credit for. Another person pointed out, “Actually, Gramma is not walking Chewy. He is her bodyguard as she walks!” That’s an excellent point, as no one will mess with Grandma when she’s with this good boy.

If there was ever a reason to get up and move, it’s the hope that we can also walk our big, loving dogs in our 90s. If we’re lucky enough to reach that age, we might as well do it well.
