Rescuing an animal that knows nothing of luxury and giving it a luxurious life is the most surefire way to boost your serotonin there ever will be. There's just something so special about watching them realize that this kind of life exists, and now it's theirs!

For a couple of barn cats, that dream finally came true on August 23rd, when their new mom tucked them into a real-life bed so they could sleep there. They had no idea it was a thing, and they hardly knew what to do with themselves, but that made it all the more amazing to watch:

These kitties are very lucky to have ended up at the Freedom Farmhouse! They'll get to enjoy cozy beds and farm life, the best of both worlds!

When the farmers bought this property in 2018, they had no idea that there were already residents on the property: a colony of 16 barn cats! The couple had also never had cats before at all, so now having 16 feral barn cats to care for, things were a little wonky for a while. According to their website , they had trapped, spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and re-released all of them back to the land, and it inspired them to start up their Freedom Farmhouse project!

Now, the sanctuary takes in farm animals that have been abused or neglected and they're working toward becoming a certified non-profit organization. However, just because they've gotten a whole farm of other animals since then doesn't mean they forgot about the barn cats, and the couple recently made the decision to bring all remaining 10 cats inside. While there, they discovered three of their favorite things: the kitchen, all of the fun places to sit, and, most importantly, the bed.

When Should You Retire a Barn Cat?

Just like any working animal, there comes a point when working is no longer good for their body, and it's time to retire. Being a barn cat is indeed a job, and a tough one: they're braving the elements, battling rodents, and living outside. It's hard on them. At this point, the youngest barn cat at Freedom Farmhouse would be six years old, and six years feels like more in that line of work.

When you have barn cats, you should keep a very close eye on them and retire them if:

    1. They start to lose weight rapidly.
    2. They're having trouble moving or hunting.
    3. They seem lethargic.
    4. They're over about 10 years old.

If you're not comfortable bringing all of your barn cats to live in your house, that's okay: there are special rescues that deal with rounding them up and finding them good forever homes. But honestly, bringing them all inside looks like a lot of fun!
