Indoor Tuxedo Cat Meets Outdoor Cougar and It's an Instant Yet Unlikely Friendship

It's so funny to see our indoor pets — who live very cushy lives, safe from predators — react to their bigger outdoor counterparts. If you have a dog who's ever come face to face with a real life wolf (hopefully from a distance, or through a closed window, of course) you probably know exactly what I'm talking about. They're so alike, but so different, especially when it comes to the lives they lead. That fact is even more true when it comes to cats; they could never imagine being a panther or a cougar (as hard as some of them, mine included, try to act like them).

For example, the kitty in this TikTok video is completely fascinated by the big kitty outside her window. There's no getting her away from her new friend!

On Sunday, August 25, @cricketandstrawfl shared this footage of her Tuxedo Cat posted up at the back door in their house, where a cougar was hanging out. It goes without saying that the cougar in question was many times bigger than Phoebe, but that didn't seem to scare her at all.

It seemed like the cougar was pretty curious, too. He didn't appear to be aggressive; instead, he was staring at Phoebe and gently pawing at the glass, trying to figure out who the tiny cat in the window was.

Finally, Phoebe got a little brave and put her paws up, too. Something tells me she probably stayed there for a very long time!

The comments are full of jokes, including one person calling this the premium version of the cat distribution system. LOL!

"My toxic trait would be trying to play with it with cat toys through the glass," one person wrote.

Probably not the best idea, but it does sound fun...

Are Cougars Nice to Domestic Cats?

It's for the best that Phoebe and her new friend were separated by glass, because if they met in the wild, things might not have gone quite so smoothly.

Unfortunately, cougars — who are also called mountain lions — aren't going to be very friendly towards domestic cats in the wild. They will likely see them as prey , and have been known to attack cats and kittens before.

These big cats have a lot of advantages over domestic cats, like strength and speed, and if they feel that they have to compete with a kitty for resources outside, that may be all it takes for them to try to eliminate that competition. Yikes.

So the moral of the story? Keep your indoor kitties inside, and take extra caution if you live somewhere these animals are present. Safety comes first, as cute as a friendship between a big cat and a little cat could be.
