When you decide to welcome a new fur baby into your family, one of the first things you'll likely consider is what to name them. Will you choose a name based on their appearance or personality? Perhaps something cute, tough, or inspired by what you ate for lunch? The possibilities are endless, and this is coming from someone who named her Maine Coon kitten 'Meatball.'

The wonderful people at Chewy surveyed pet parents on their inspiration for naming their pets, and also looked to our millions of customers’ pet names to find the top trends. This is so fun to read about!

Here are the Top 10 names on the rise.

Within the top trending pet names of Chewy customers, Keebler takes the cake (and cookies) with the most movement, up an impressive 1,107% from last year. The next pet names that have increased in popularity since 2023, all with over 30% gains, include Lainey, Nami, Bluey, Canela, Wednesday, Marshmallow, Bingo, Garfield, and Rocket.

Great, now I absolutely have to get a cat and name it Marshmallow! How cute is that?

The Chewy survey also found that more traditional names continue to hold their own, with Bella as the #1 most popular pet name shared by over 350,000 pets, followed by Luna, Lucy, Max, Charlie, Daisy, Buddy, Bailey, Molly, and Milo.

I personally have seen so many Bellas! Both dogs and cats!

Also trending? Names inspired by pop culture! Travis Kelce’s spotlight has transferred over to pets, with the name Kelce for dogs increasing 105% since 2023. Brady is another popular pet name, likely inspired from the proclaimed goat, Tom Brady. Overall, musical artists continue to carry strong influence, with pet names like Cardi, Camila, Rylo, and Lainey all up substantially this year. Characters from beloved movies and shows, both new and nostalgic, have grown in popularity through pet names, like Snoopy, Bluey, Juniper, Wednesday, Barbie, Maverick, Loki, Garfield, Nala, and Simba . Lastly, Peaches , perhaps inspired from the beloved pitbull social media star, Miss Peaches , is up 21% this year.

You really can't beat Snoopy. I would love to meet a cat named Snoopy.

    Food names are also popular.

Just like their furry friends, pet parents are passionate about food, and many cute foodie names are trending, including Cinnamon (up 29% since 2023), Gnocchi, Churro, Oreo, Cookie, Cannoli, Waffles, Marshmallow, Miso, Mango, Peaches, Basil, and Bean . We’ve also seen spirits and beer names like Tequila, Hennessy, and Guinness rise in popularity – always name your pets responsibly!

Considering my own boss has an adorable pup named Tito , I guess booze names are a pretty big trend!

    Bougie names are big.

Another trend we’re seeing, especially with girl puppies, is names after luxury brands and designers, including Dior, Fendi, Gucci, Coco, and Chanel . We also love when multiple pets’ names have a theme, such as Coco and Chanel, and we anticipate that trend will continue to grow. Coco is up 11% since last year with Chanel up 25%.

The Chewy survey also revealed pet parents really love nicknames:

    • 83% of pet parents give their pets nicknames. More than half (55%) of Millennial and Gen Z pet parents have 2 or more nicknames for their pets.
    • 74% of nicknames are inspired by personality traits and behaviors.
    • We asked pet parents their most unique nicknames for their pets. 12% of nicknames include affectionate, cute words like “baby”, “bear,” “boo,” “cutie,” “sweet,” and “little,” as seen in Boobearington. Pet parents also enjoy less flattering words for nicknames nearly as much, with “stinky,” “butt,” “booger,” “poop,” and “fart” included in 10% of nicknames like Stink Whistle and arguably one of the most creative, Sir Poops A Lot.

Thanks to Chewy for all of these adorable names! Now we just need more pets so we can steal some of our favorites!
