Mom's Compelling List of Reasons to Adopt an Adult Cat Instead of a Kitten Is Inspiring

The homeless pet situation in the US is pretty heartbreaking if you really think about it. Though people are adopting dogs and cats who need safe, loving homes every single day, shelters are still overrun with animals, and some of them have been there, waiting for their humans to find them, for a very long time. Puppies and kittens usually have no problem being snapped up quickly; everyone loves adorable baby animals!

But unfortunately, that means that older pets, including older cats, could end up hanging out at the shelter far longer than anyone would have hoped. It's not fair that any animal should have to spend any time of their lives living in a shelter, let alone a big portion of it, and if you've been planning to adopt a kitten anytime soon, this TikTok video might just make you change your mind.

In this video recently shared by Gab Grassy on TikTok, she shared a response to the question, "We are really looking for a kitten, not an adult cat. You understand, right?"

It's all from her adult cat's point of view, though, sharing why adult cats are just as great as kittens.

"I can act like a kitten for you! I know I may not be as cute, but I promise to love you for my whole life," is her argument (okay, anyone else about to cry or is it just me?). And really, she doesn't need to go any further — her point has totally been made. That unconditional love we get from our pets really is what it's all about.

Commenters who agree with her take commented on the video, with one writing, "my favorite thing to do is go to a shelter and ask for the oldest or who's been there longest."

That's a pretty cool strategy, honestly. More people should do that! y

Adopting Adult Cats Instead of Kittens

If you're thinking about adopting an adult cat instead of a kitten, you should know ahead of time that it will be different — and it may not fit every situation.

As Wag points out, there are a few considerations you should make when trying to figure out what age cat you should adopt. Older cats are more settled in who they are (though sometimes that means it can be harder to break any bad habits they have). They're also less likely to get into mischief and destroy things the way kittens do.

However, an adult cat is typically an "easier" route than adopting a kitten, who tend to be little troublemakers (at least at first), and may require a bit of supervision and kitten-proofing at home before they can be left alone.

You know what's best for you and your family, but do know that adult cats need homes just as much as kittens do. They deserve to be loved, too!
