Rescues see a lot of cats coming through their doors, and their ages vary, as do their situations. Some cats come with names from loving homes, while others are strays that the shelter names when they get them. Naming animals isn't as easy as you'd think!

One foster mom nails it every single time, though, knocks it right out of the park. Her names are unmatched, and she never stops giving them to us. This time, on Thursday, August 29th, she brought us a fall-themed litter that is melting hearts by the hundreds:

THE LEAF PILE šŸ‚āœØTheir eyes are a little bit gunky, but they look very gunky because I just put erythromycin ointment in them! Anyways follow to see them grow šŸ˜» #bottlebaby #bottlebabies #kittensoftiktok #fosterkittens

Pot Roast's Mom has always had a real talent for naming her cats. Hence, Pot Roast!

Pot Roast's Mom (who has never shared her real name) has been caring for cats ever since she was in college, when someone brought would-be Pot Roast to her campus and she couldn't resist. While Pot Roast was still alive, she also had another cat named Carrot and fostered a Pit Bull named Glenda.

However, since Pot Roast's death in 2022, she's been committed to fostering more than ever. She's fostered several litters of kittens and named all of them herself, including:

    1. Her only foster-fails, Faucet and Coupon.
    2. The Potato Litter (Cheesy, Au Gratin, Mashed)
    3. The Summerween Litter (Spooky, Slime, Shriek)
    4. Now, the Leaf Pile Litter (Crunch, Crackle, Crinkle)

Thanks to her social media presence and excellent naming abilities, almost all of her fosters have been adopted by now, with those who aren't ready yet receiving waiting list applications for days. Everyone wants a piece of this sweet litter!

Can You Change a Cat's Name When You Get Them?

As amazing as Pot Roast's Mom's names are, they're not their "original" names; she specifies in most captions what their "shelter names" are. When they're adopted, the parents have a choice: to keep the shelter name, to keep her fun name, or to go with something else entirely.

If the cat is young enough, you should be able to change their name without any issues: cats have a vocabulary of anywhere between 20-40 words. If you say it enough, they'll understand eventually, just like they understand most of their little nicknames.

If you do choose to change your cat's name, you should just be sure that you have their vet records, microchip, and collar all updated to reflect the new information. You should also let the shelter know you're doing it just for their records - that way, if kitty ever gets out, they'll know who to call!
