Golden Retriever Who Loves Giving Mom Long Hugs Is a True Sweetheart

When it comes to affection, most pups aren't too shy about showing it to their favorite humans. Whether they're giving us way too many kisses, wagging their tail and getting the zoomies every time we come home from work, or cuddling up next to us in bed or on the couch, dogs never try to hide the way they feel about us, and there's no kind of feeling like the unconditional love that only dogs can provide. But at the same time, they're not always into showing affection the way humans do to each other; for a lot of dogs, hugs are totally off the table.

Unless they're this dog, I guess! This pup seems to adore hugs so much that he could hug his mama forever, and this TikTok video sharing one of those moments between a mom and her dog is melting everyone's hearts.

On Sunday, August 25,  dog mom Makayla shared this sweet moment when her Golden Retriever, Grissom, not only asked her for a hug but also didn't want to let go!

Grissom stands up on his hind legs, arms outstretched, when he wants to hug his mama, and of course, she complies (how could anyone not?). To make the moment even sweeter, she realized that Grissom was actually watching them hug in the full length mirror that was behind him. Hey, he can't help it if he's an adorable guy.

Even after he was done with the hug, he still wanted to cuddle his mom and look at himself in the mirror, which no one can blame him for.

Unsurprisingly, commenters are all about it, gushing over Grissom in the comments. One person complimented Makayla on the way she cares for her dog, writing, "I love the way you listen and hear him. Always a pleasure to watch you guys being with each other."

    Too sweet!

    Do Dogs Like Hugs?

Unfortunately, as far as hugs go, Grissom is an outlier: Most dogs don't like hugs.

According to a study shared in Psychology Today , in photos and videos of dogs being hugged, the overwhelming majority are actually showing signs of stress , which includes turning their heads away, lowering their ears, or even bearing their teeth (no, they're not smiling).

That means your dog isn't happy while the hug is going on, and you're missing on the cues they're sending you with their body language, which does the opposite of building a trusting bond between human and dog. Many people don't know this, though, so don't beat yourself up if you discover your dog actually hate hugs; just offer them plenty of pets and scratches instead.

Like anything else, though, this is dependent on individual dogs and their personalities. If your dog is a hugger, though, there's no reason not to go for it — just listen to their cues when they tell you they've had enough!
