Golden Retriever Sweetly Carrying Mom's Groceries Is Such a Perfect Little Helper

Golden Retrievers were made to retrieve, as their name suggests. Though many of them have traded the waterfowl hunting for battles with tennis balls and long walks to the dog park, those retrieving instincts never leave them.

On September 3rd, a dog mom showed off how her pup was using his retrieving skills for good. As soon as she comes home with a bag full of groceries, he was ready and willing to help her bring them inside. Everyone should take note and ask their dogs if they can do this, too:

I hope @natizaguirre is aware of how lucky she is to have a dog like this. My dogs would just be tearing the bags apart looking for anything that they might want to eat, and by golly they'd find something.

There's a Husky behind this sweet boy, and it's definitely worth noting that the Husky did not have anything. He was not being helpful at all, but that's okay, because his Golden brother was picking up all of his slack. He carries the bag with ease, and then he takes his bounty to his bed to await his praise!

Judging by his stunning professionalism, this is not the first time he's carried groceries for her. She's not forcing him to do it; he's probably demanding it! If you have a retriever, you should do the same. It's good to encourage their instincts in healthy ways rather than to let them express them however they see fit. A light back of groceries is perfect for carrying!

How to Stop Your Retriever From Stealing Things

If you have not been encouraging retrieving in a good way, unfortunately, your Golden Retriever has a very real chance of becoming a thief. They don't do it because they want to steal; they may even think they're helping!

If you've noticed that your Retriever breed has started to steal things around the house, you should first take notice of what they're stealing. Most of the time, it'll be things like socks, silverware, or toys. Then you'll want to figure out when they're doing it: are they stealing when you're gone? Or are they bringing them to bed? A pet-watching camera can help figure out the thieving routine! Once you know more, you can:

    1. Catch them in the act and gently redirect them.
    2. Start giving them specific things to retrieve and bring to you, like the TV remote. Even if they're older, they can learn!
    3. Stop leaving things around for them to steal. It really helps!
    4. Make sure they're getting enough enrichment and aren't just bored.
    5. Speak to your vet. If they won't quit, there could be an underlying cause!

Luckily for his mom, this sweet Golden Retriever didn't put up too big of a fight when she took "his" groceries away. Now, he's just waiting for his next shift as her favorite helper!
