Begging is a habit that we need to break as soon as we see it pop up in our pets. It's annoying, it's rude, and if they beg to the wrong person, they could be fed something that could seriously hurt them.

Nipping it in the bud is important, but that does not mean it's east. On Tuesday, September 10th, one dog mom found that out the hard way: right after she told her Coonhound to cut it out, he just lost it. He doesn't think it's funny, but everyone else sure does:

I’ve never met a dog more physically or vocally expressive than Maui. Black and Tan Coonhounds are the biggest babies I’ve encountered #blackandtancoonhounds #dogsoftiktok #dogs #coonhound #coonhoundsoftiktok #pettiktok #fypage #fyp

Amanda and Maui are a wonderful pair who genuinely match each other's energy so well. He must've learned that pout from somewhere!

Maui is a good boy most of the time. He's good on walks, he loves going out for a pup cup, and he's kind to everyone he meets. He's also a rescue; he's been with his mom since he was just a puppy, so he knows the rules of her home. Even so, he tests the waters every now and then.

Mostly at mealtime: Maui has a little bit of a begging problem. According to his mom, his best move is to stand directly in front of your face and pout or whine. However, when she's had enough, she sends him away - to the other side of the couch. He pouts there for a while. Fortunately, dogs don't have the greatest short-term memory, so he forgets about it pretty quickly.

How to Stop Dogs From Begging

Whether you're training your dogs for a legitimate job or just trying to train them not to annoy you, "no begging" is rule number two, right after "potty outside." Begging is often a harder habit to break, which is why you need to be incredibly diligent. If your dog has a begging problem, you should:

    1. Train them to "put themselves up" during your mealtimes in their crates or in their beds.
    2. Give them something to do, like chewing on a stuffed Kong, so you can enjoy your meal.
    3. Ignore them completely when they approach you and start begging.
    4. When they get tired of being ignored and walk away, praise that.

There are two things you should not do when you're breaking the begging curse: don't give in and don't get physical. Hitting, kicking, or shoving your dog away will only make matters worse, even if it "stops" the begging for a short time. If they pout, just let them... and take video! You'll be a hit!
