Newfoundland’s Well-Executed Plan To Get Treats on 'Walkie' Is Every Dog’s Hero

We all know dogs are smart, but some of them are next-level crafty. Take, for instance, Homer the Newfoundland. He knows it's time for a walk and what to do to get precisely the amount of treats he wants, and honestly, it's a pretty smart plan.

The recent video shared to TikTok by @homerthenewf reveals the clever way Homer tricks his "pawrents" into giving him all the snacks on a walk, proving dogs are smarter than we think. Take a look at his plan in action below!

"I cant go for a walkie without 50+ motivational treats!" the caption reads, and this is a fact.

The video, which begins with "Come on a walkie with me," shows Homer as the next slide explains he "needs motivational treats." Mom prepares his favorite freeze-dried treats to get him out the door, and from the sound of it, there are a lot of them!

The walk starts off well, but a few seconds in, Homer looks back, then stops completely, awaiting a treat (which he gets). He then explores the bushes and asks for another treat. That wasn't enough so he plants himself down on the grass until he receives another. That gets him up again, so they make their way down a trail for a bit.

After "lagging behind on purpose for another treat (which he gets)," Homer once again decides he's not taking another step until—you got it!—another treat!

"Another successful treat-filled walk," the video concludes and  of this big guy's 241,000 followers, some are head over heels for his tactics. 10/10 would give all the treats, too!

"Hey Homer, I booped your snoot. So you should get another treat for that," one person wrote.

"Hello my big Teddy bear!" another gushed.

"A well executed plan!" another added and it is indeed!

    Newfoundlands Are Extremely Intelligent

To say Homer knew what he was doing is an understatement! Newfies can be stubborn and strong-willed, but they can outsmart pet parents, thanks to their level intelligence.

PetMD describes the Newfoundland breed as affectionate, trusting, outgoing, and gentle-natured, which makes them great companions in any home—specifically one with children because they're so gentle and sweet.

However, because their origins stem from ship jobs and cat-pulling, they tend to do well when given an "entertaining" job and can be trained easily with *lots* of treats. This is probably how some of them learn they can get more treats by purposely not doing the command until they get more, like Homer!

Overall, his plan worked, so bravo, Homer!
