Mini Dachshund Waiting Outside His Brother's Crate After His Surgery Is So Ready to Play

Dogs who live together will, after they spend long enough together, will learn to love each other. That gets easier when they're younger and less set in their ways, but even older dogs can sometimes be found falling head over heels for new pups!

On September 15th, one sweet Longhaired Dachshund's brother was taken in for a surgery. Everything went well, but he was still tired after coming home. When he was ready to wake up, he was probably very surprised to find his sister waiting and ready to play right outside his carrier:

George and Remi are the sweetest pair in the world. Hopefully, by now, he's been able to play with her at least a little bit!

We don't know exactly what happened with George, only that he had something happen. Whatever it was kept him away from his younger sister for at least a little while, and having to stay in his carrier until he fully woke up was clearly agonizing for her. She wanted to play!

Remi Mae is considerably younger than George, and at first, they didn't get along super well, but that's to be expected. The first few days after bringing a new dog home, puppy or not, can be brutal. But with a Dachshund puppy, whose literal only objective in life for the first 4 months or so is to bite, poor George deserves a medal! Now, though, Remi has grown up a little and they get on better. Thank goodness!

Best Ways To Keep Dog Safe After Surgery

Whether your dog had to have a true surgery, a lesser procedure, or they're just not feeling well, the focus needs to be on making them better. Sometimes, we have to do it in spite of them: your dog may want to get up and run, jump, or play, but it's just not advisable.

When your dog first comes home , you should:

    1. Make sure they're wearing their Cone of Shame if they were given one.
    2. If you have another dog, a onesie over them may be needed to prevent licking.
    3. Keep the dogs separated for at least 12 hours to allow the injured dog to fully rest and recover.
    4. Either commit to keeping them off the furniture or provide accessibility aids, like doggy stairs or a ramp.
    5. Keep them from running, jumping, or playing aggressively with their siblings.

Your vet may be able to prescribe a light sedative for the first few days, depending on the procedure, to keep them too sleepy to try and re-injure themselves. If they don't,  just try to keep the vibes in your home low and as calm as possible - don't rile them up. That means you, Remi Mae!
