Golden Retriever's Jealous Grumbling When Mom and Dad Are Snuggling Rivals Any Toddler

If there is one thing dogs are exceptionally good at, it's being jealous. Literally anything could hit a pup in their jealousy bone: food, a comfy blanket, or even something as simple as being affectionate to somebody else.

One couple had to learn this the hard way: on September 18th, they were trying to sleep in, but their sweet Golden Retriever was absolutely not having it. His grumpy grumbling could probably be heard through the whole house:

Winston The Golden, or "Wacko Winston," is so dramatic, I love it. Lack of cuddling is a fate worse than death, apparently!

Winston is barely a year old, which makes this ten times funnier: he's the baby of the family, and he is committed to acting like it. His poor parents put up with his tantrums and crazy antics daily: some of his favorite things to do are whine, go for drives to get pup cups, whine at the baristas who aren't moving fast enough, and beg for dinner early.

Safe to say, Winston has excellent vocal cords, and his parents have not known peace since he came home to them in October of last year. Luckily, he's also exceptionally cute, so they don't mind his tantrums. Just wait until the terrible twos, guys!

How to Get Dog to Stop Whining

Winston is very lucky: his parents don't mind if he expresses himself through his grumbling. I'm the same way: we have one dog who never stops whining. Vet checkups are no match for this guy.

If you have a dog who practices constant whining like it's their full time job, try:

    1. Making sure they're okay: they could be whining because they need to potty, they're hungry, or they're hurt.
    2. Having "cool down time" where the two of you sit together quietly.
    3. Ignoring the behavior completely.

Dogs need a lot of sleep (anywhere from 12-14 hours per day as adults). If they're not getting enough sleep, their overtired-ness could be what's causing the issue. Make sure they have a quiet place to sleep throughout the day, and remove all distractions from the bed/crate/room where they sleep at night so they don't keep themselves up.

If all else fails, a trip to the vet is definitely necessary: there might not be an underlying physical cause, but there could be an underlying mental one. For example, whiny pups often suffer from separation anxiety. Prescription medication can help make it better. In Winston's case, though... he totally just wanted the middle.
