When you bring a new baby home, everything changes. If you have a dog who previously held the title "only child," there's a definite fear the two won't get along, or worse—your beloved pup will feel left out. Carter the Golden Retriever is still learning how to share his mom, and siblings everywhere are saying, "same."

A TikTok video @carterthegolden shared recently shows Carter patiently waiting for his tummy rubs since the baby got some. It's only fair! Take a look at his funny reaction.

In the 11-second clip that says, "When it used to be you getting tummy strokes and this isn't what you signed up to," Carter lays on the floor near his mom, though her focus is all about the new baby. As she plays with the giggling human, Carter can't hide the expression on his face, which seems to convey sheer annoyance that he's being looked over.

"Who invited tiny hooman?" the caption says, and followers are rooting for Cart's belly rubs!

"Hope you didn't stop Carter's tummy rubs," one person wrote.

"He needs it, too," another added.

Based on the many clips of Carter and his human sister, we're pretty sure he doesn't hold a grudge. If anything, they're as close as can be. He's gentle and patient with her like the good boy he is, so this little tummy rubbing situation is probably old history by now!

How to Ensure Your Dog Bonds With the New Baby

Good relationships don't happen overnight. When it comes to introducing your dog to a new baby, Parents Magazine notes it's best to start as early as possible, like during pregnancy. Long before baby comes , spend time with your dog so they don't develop jealousy issues right off the bat. They're likely picking up on all the emotions and possible changes that comes with having a baby, so they'll need a little extra reassurance.

Before baby is in the world, use the time to practice obedience training with your pup while also exposing him or her to children by going to parks or places children are around. The idea is to numb them to the extra noise so a baby's cry won't bother them as much.

Setting up your home with baby's things, and letting your dog sniff and be a part of the process will lessen the surprise aspect of a new person. Likewise, practice pushing the stroller with your dog in tow so you can work out the kinks of daily walks before baby arrives.

After giving birth, have someone take a blanket or onesie that baby wore to the dog so he or she can get used get used to the scent. By the time baby is home, the scent will feel familiar. You should also give them plenty of affection and praise when you first walk in and reward them when they're being calm around the baby. If they misbehave, gently redirect them to a toy or other distraction, but don't emphasize what they've done wrong, or they might associate the negative feeling with the baby.

When you supervise interactions between the two and let your dog be a part of baby-related activities, they'll eventually understand this change doesn't have to be a bad thing. Actually, it's a great thing. They now have a built-in friend for life.
