Sweet Staffy Sniffs Out Barbecue Like the Nosiest Neighbor

Barbecue season is ending, which is an unfortunate fact of this time of the year. Walking down the street and sniffing around to see what everyone else is cooking is always fun, because someone is always cooking out in these warmer months!

In honor of the last dregs of barbecue season for most of us, one Staffordshire Terrier got caught outside, sniffing out a barbecue on Monday, September 22nd. Her little nose twitches are actually hilarious, and the neighbors who are cooking out are sincerely losing out on her presence:

Bella the Staffy is one talented sniffer. Nothing's getting past that sweet little nose!

Bella is the best dog ever. She's living in New Zealand, and her parents bring her along for every adventure they possibly can. When they're not out at the beach or finding friends to play with, they're at home giving her everything she wants! She's smart, too: when she was just a puppy, she figured out that rolling her favorite ball under the bed or the dresser on purpose gets her parents to play, even if they're busy!

Her favorite activity is shown clearly here, though: Bella loves to sniff. Whether it's a neighborhood barbecue or another dog walking by, she's always ready to find out. Unfortunately for her, she was not invited to the cookout, so she just has to sniff from afar this time!

How to Improve Your Dog's Sense of Smell

Though dogs generally have a much better sense of smell than humans do, not all of them are exceptional. Staffies, for example, were bred more for bull and bear fighting, which doesn't require quite as much of a sense of smell as hunting does.

If you've noticed that your dog doesn't have the best sense of smell, no matter what breed, there are some things you can do to improve it:

    1. Taking them on walks in new places exposes them to new smells.
    2. Play "scenting" games with them by having them smell something and then hiding it and having them sniff it out.
    3. Bring them around new people and animals frequently.
    4. If you suspect your dog has little to no sense of smell at all, talk to your vet: they may be able to help diagnose a problem.

Most of the time, you won't necessarily be improving their sense of smell so much as helping them refine it. Exposing them to new smells or things they'll smell frequently in public is a great way to help navigate distractions. Don't be surprised, though, if your dog never grows out of being a little bit of a nosy Nellie!
