German Shorthaired Pointer Embarks on Hilarious Mission to Share a Sip with Bottle-Fed Newborn Pup

It's heartbreaking to think of any puppy being separated from their biological mama at such a young age that they aren't even ready to eat solid dog food yet, but it happens often — and thankfully, as humans, we have the ability to bottle feed these puppies when it does. It's the next best thing to allow them to continue to grow and thrive as they become more independent, and by the time they're ready to consume food, they're usually willing to do so happily. But that doesn't mean there aren't dogs out there who feel a bit nostalgic for when they got to drink milk!

I feel like that's exactly what's going on here in this Instagram video below. This German Shorthaired Pointer is very clearly a much bigger dog, but that isn't stopping him from trying to get in on this bottle that a newborn puppy is currently in the process of drinking.

This post from @centerfyr_gsp shows what happens when a very determined German Shorthaired Pointer just can't keep himself away from the bottle of milk that's perfectly at his eye level... and it doesn't seem he cares one bit that his tiny puppy friend is trying to enjoy his meal!

According to what the pup's mom wrote in the video, the adult dog here isn't really an adult officially — he's big, but he's only nine months old. So his obsession with milk is a little more understandable when you realize he probably remembers when he got to have some for all of his meals, too.

As the puppy is drinking away, his bigger friend won't stop trying to lick at the bottle himself. The good news? Puppy doesn't seem at all bothered by this and just keeps on drinking. That skill will serve him well as he grows!

When Can Puppies Start Eating Solids?

In most cases, healthy puppies aren't limited to nursing or drinking bottles of milk for very long.

As Pet MD points out, most pups are ready to to start the weaning process by the time they're six weeks old. Then, they'll gradually move away from milk as their only source of nutrition as they acclimate to puppy food, and usually, they are completely done with milk between the ages of six and eight weeks old. If they are being bottle fed, the process of weaning can start even earlier, typically around three weeks.

They can't go straight to kibble while they're weaning, though. The site notes that most puppies start with wet, soft food and work their way up to kibble, and in almost all cases, a puppy who is available to be adopted is weaned and used to dry food.

It really is hard to blame this grown up pup for wanting some milk, though. He must have really loved it as a baby!
