Baby Basset Hound's Hilarious Grumbling Is the Funniest Tantrum

If there's one thing you should know about puppies before you get one, it's that they grumble. A lot. While you can try your best to stop it, you're going to have a really hard time. It's better to just embrace it.

Luckily for one Basset Hound puppy recently, his mom has totally embraced his Stage 5 Whining. At this point, all she can do is laugh and post the evidence on TikTok for all of us to see:

"Houndful Hearts" are hearts full of love for certified yappers. Basset Hounds are notoriously sassy, and sweet little Norman proves that!

Norman is one of many Basset Hounds living in this house, and he's actually a pup from an in-house litter. They're breeders! The Oregon-based Basset bunch consists of some pups they're breeding, but they've also rescued quite a few of them over the years. While they've had wildly different personalities, as all dogs do, one thing rang true for every one: they're all yappers.

While all of their seven million Bassets are a little grumbly, as they should be, the puppies are definitely the worst. They just can't do everything yet, and they haven't learned how to communicate effectively. Luckily, soon, his grumble will grow into that trademark Basset Hound bark - it only gets louder from here, mom!

Why Do Puppies Grumble So Much?

There are a lot of different noises a puppy will make, and all of them are pretty normal, even if they don't sound like it. You have to remember that they're just learning to make noise; of course they want to try out all of the different ones!

Grumbling is halfway between a bark and a whine, typically a low, throat-forward sound. It's usually accompanied by them mouthing , moving around, kicking or stomping their feet, or even flipping upside down. If a puppy is getting grumbly, it typically means:

    1. They're tired and need to nap.
    2. They see something they don't like and want to fight it.
    3. They see something they do like and want to fight it.
    4. They want to play.
    5. They're wanting some attention.
    6. They want a snack.
    7. Another dog is in the room and they're keeping an eye on the situation.

Genuinely, grumbling is a very unserious thing puppies do - it's one of the most unserious things they do. No matter what you do, they're usually not going to stop until they feel satisfied, so the best thing you can do is ignore it (as long as you know all of their needs are met).

In time, ignoring it may even help reduce the behavior - but, honestly, no promises. I have a puppy who grumbles at all times, a 9-year old senior boy who grumbles twice as much, and a 5-year-old who can smoke them both in the grumble competition. Good luck!
