Rare Albino Raccoon Sneaks Onto Woman's Porch and Everyone Is Amazed

Raccoons on people's porches are not a rare sight. You've probably had a raccoon on your porch at least once, even if you don't know it. Maybe they didn't stay long, but they were almost certainly there.

An albino raccoon sneaking onto your porch, though.. .that's a sight to behold, and not something most people have seen before. However, one woman caught one of these incredible animals eating some snacks at her house recently, and she was kind enough to share the footage with the world:

I'm so jealous of @friedricegoodnight for this. I have seen many a raccoon in my day, but never one that looks like this. I didn't even think they existed!

When she caught the video, she was actually not sure if this sweet boy was a raccoon at all, which is exactly why she turned to TikTok for answers. There's still a little bit of debate in the comments: some people think he's an opossum, but the shape of his cheeks and the follow-up video showing off his fluffy tail prove that he's definitely a raccoon!

He keeps coming back for food, which he learned to do when he found out that Piper puts out a bowl of cat food at night for a feral cat who lives in the neighborhood (also in the follow-up video). Now that she knows he's there, though, she's said she's going to put something else out for him, because cat food isn't the healthiest (and because, with him eating it, the kitty doesn't get any!). While bringing him inside is the worst idea, possibly ever, we all secretly wish!

Albino Raccoons Are Incredibly Rare

She's very lucky, because these animals are almost impossible to find, and he just walked right up onto her porch! He must really like her. Many cultures consider those with albinism to be good luck or even magical, so lots of comments are assuring her that this is good fortune!

Only 1 in every 20,000 raccoons is born with Albinism, which means any person's chance of seeing one is about 1 in 750,000. That's almost a one in a million shot, and she should feel very special - even if the superstitions aren't your cup of tea, you have to admit that it's pretty cool.

As far as their chances of survival in the wild, though, albino raccoons aren't always so lucky themselves. Because they're not grey and black, which helps them blend in, they're easier for predators to spot, which often leads to their untimely deaths. Beyond that, albino raccoons inherit a lot of the same health problems that albino individuals in other species do, like:

1. Visual impairment.
2. Sensitivity to light.
3. Skin conditions.
4. Skin cancer.

For now, this raccoon is happy, healthy, and relatively safe. People in the comments are asking her to call local sanctuaries or wildlife centers to see if they'd take him, and it's a solid plan - with as rare as they are, it makes sense that professionals might want a closer look. I know I do!
