Ross Mosser, a longtime volunteer of the town, recently passed away at age 82 on June 3 in Portland, Oregon.
In honor of Mosser and his 45-year commitment to the town, the flags were lowered to half staff at Town Hall in remembrance, according to the Town Manager’s Weekly Update.
Mosser was one of the original volunteers for the Paradise Valley Police Department starting in February 2008, according to a proclamation issued by Mayor Jerry Bien-Willner recognizing Mosser’s commitment to the town. He was also a sworn reserve deputy for eight years, chair of the Police Retirement Board for 30 years, and member of Town Council and Planning Commission for two terms each.
PVPD Chief Freeman Carney shared the following remarks:
“Russ Mosser was a shining example of what it means to serve. As a dedicated PVPD volunteer for well over a decade, his contributions and unwavering dedication to our team and town were truly exceptional. His impact on our police department and his legacy remained strong, even after he moved to Oregon. As the chief, I serve others for a living, but when I retire, I hope to be like Russ and have more free time to continue serving others. His passing is a profound loss felt by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. Russ will be deeply missed, but his spirit of service and dedication will always inspire us.”
Mosser moved to Paradise Valley in 1974. He had a successful career in sales and marketing. As a town volunteer, he was instrumental in raising all of the private money and procuring exhibits for the McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park and 10,000-square-foot model railroad building, according to his obituary from Dignity Memorial. He continued to be on the board of the Scottsdale Railroad & Mechanical Society until the time of his death.
He was an active member of Paradise Valley United Methodist Church, traveling to New Orleans to clean up after Hurricane Katrina four times, and spearheading the sponsoring of many refugee families.
He spent years assisting school children in reading programs, and joined his son, Scott, and daughter-in-law, Gigi, in support of their international medical missions.
After moving to Portland, Oregon in 2021 to be closer to family, Mosser served as the president of the Washington County Sheriff’s Foundation. The signature line of Russ’s email reads, “Service to others is the rent we pay for living on this planet,” the obituary states.
Mosser is survived by Carol, his wife of 60 years; his daughter and son-in-law, Kimberly and Scott Beaton; his son and daughter-in-law Scott and Gigi; four granddaughters, Emily Beaton, Bridgette Beaton, Mayari and Tala; six sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law; five nieces; two nephews; and his cousin and wife.
Mosser was preceded in death by his nephew, Kyle McAfee.
The celebration of life will be held Saturday, June 15 at Southminster Presbyterian Church in Beaverton, Oregon.
