Not long after announcing its new icono biplane system , Valley Hospital in Paramus said it installed another piece of high-tech imaging equipment from Siemens Healthineers.

The hospital added two Naeotom Alpha with Quantum Technology computed tomography (CT) scanners, according to Valley Health System. The July 2 announcement noted the institution is the first in New Jersey to use this technology for diagnostic imaging .

The new scanners will give Valley’s medical team images with greater detail when treating pulmonary, cardiac and oncology patients, the health system said.

For example, Dr. Himanshu Gupta, director of cardiac imaging for The Valley Hospital, said, “The images obtained provide remarkable resolution revealing an impressive view of the patient’s coronary arteries. We are able to scan patients with metal stents, high coronary calcium burden, and prosthetic heart valves in details that are not possible with previous generation CT scanners.”

    How does it work?

The Naeotom Alpha scanner "directly converts X-rays into an electrical signal, which is then used to create an image. The energy of each X-ray is measured, so spectral information is available for every scan, and the images are contrast-rich with high spatial resolution at the same dose."

The Valley Hospital currently utilizes the scanners for inpatient and outpatient diagnostic imaging. However, the network also plans to expand the offering to other outpatient Valley locations.

“This technology generates images with a high level of detail not seen with traditional CT scans. Using this scanner, physicians can make more confident clinical decisions with diagnostic consistency,” added Kristien Zingone, director of diagnostic imaging, Valley Hospital.

The state-of-the-art technology is part of Valley’s $868 million facility on Winters Avenue. The building officially opened to patients April 14 .

“When designing the new facility, several key design elements were taken into consideration,” Dr. Robert
    Brenner
, the newly named CEO of Valley Health System, said before the new location’s launch . “These included employing the latest in health care technology, the adjacency of services to improve patient care and ensuring we can operate our campus sustainably for years to come.
