Columbia Basin College receives $200,000 grant to enhance stem course research

PASCO, Wash.-- Exciting news for Columbia Basin College the college recently received a grant from the National Science Foundation to enhance stem course research.

The college will be getting $200,000 to train instructors and focus on adding research experiences to classes.

Chemistry professor, Eric Melby at CBC tells Apple Valley News Now that kind of experience gives students a boost as they're preparing for stem careers!

“We will organize an undergraduate research symposium where all those students in this space ideally will be presenting their research to the whole campus. The cool thing is will select the top five students from that research symposium and they will be funded to go and present their research at a regional conference,” Melby said.

At the conference they’ll be meeting with students and faculty members along with researchers from throughout the area to present their work. He also adds that this grant also opens up the doors for CBC to apply for a larger grant that’s 5 years and 1 million dollars, Melby said.
