Excessive heat watch issued for much of inland SLO County — including Mid-State Fair

As the California Mid-State Fair gets underway in Paso Robles, temperatures are expected to reach dangerous levels in coming days throughout inland California.

According to a notice posted by the National Weather Service , an excessive heat watch has been issued for San Luis Obispo County’s interior valleys and mountain areas, with temperatures expected to reach 95 to 110 degrees during the day with overnight lows in the 70s.

From Friday morning through Wednesday evening next week, residents of inland areas including Paso Robles, Atascadero San Miguel, Templeton, Creston, Shandon, Carrizo Plain, Hearst Castle, La Panza Range and Lake Nacimiento may be at an increased risk for heat-related illnesses, according to the Weather Service

The Weather Service advised drinking plenty of fluids and staying in air-conditioned areas out of direct sunlight during the peak days.

Young children and pets are at particular risk, and should not be left unattended in vehicles, which can reach lethal temperatures within minutes, the Weather Service warned.

California Mid-State Fair forecast

For the fair’s opening day, temperatures in Paso Robles were expected to reach 98 degrees with winds of 5 to 10 mph in the afternoon, according to the National Weather Service’s seven-day forecast .

On Thursday, temperatures may reach 103 degrees, followed by a high of 105 degrees on Friday.

Temperatures will hit their peak on Saturday, Sunday and Monday, during which highs could max out at 106 degrees during the hottest hours of the day.

Overnight, Paso Robles is expected to sit in the high 50s to low 60s even as temperatures push well into triple digits over the next few days.
