TLC & Shaggy with DJ Flashback
TLC & Shaggy are performing Thursday, July 25 with DJ Flashback opening the show at 7:30 pm. The concert takes place in the Chumash Grandstand Arena.
TLC’s influence spans pop, hip-hop, R&B, fashion, and female empowerment, defining generations. Formed in Atlanta in 1990, Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes and Tionne “T-Boz” Watkins aimed high. They began working with producer Jermaine Dupri, and manager Perry “Pebbles” Reid suggested adding Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas, forming TLC. In 1992, they released their debut album, Ooooooohhh…, selling 4 million copies in the U.S. and producing three top-ten singles.
Their 1994, breakthrough album, CrazySexyCool was critically acclaimed, with Rolling Stone ranking it among the 500 best albums of all time. It produced four top-five singles, and “Waterfalls” won MTV’s Video of the Year, making TLC the first black act to win. Their 1999 album, FanMail, was hailed by Rolling Stone as ahead of its time.
TLC has sold 85 million records worldwide, achieved four U.S. number-one singles, ten top-ten singles, won four Grammy Awards, five MTV Awards, five Soul Train Awards, and released four multi-platinum albums, with FanMail and CrazySexyCool certified Diamond.
Shaggy began his career as an MC in New York City’s dancehall scene after moving to Brooklyn as a teen. Following four years in the U.S. Marines and two tours in Operation Desert Storm, he signed his first record deal and achieved global success with “Oh Carolina.” The only diamond-selling dancehall artist, Shaggy has sold over 40 million albums, had eight singles on the Billboard Hot 100, and seven albums on the Billboard 200. He has won two Grammy Awards and is one of the top three streamed reggae artists on Spotify. In 2009, he founded the Shaggy Make a Difference Foundation, raising millions for Kingston’s Bustamante Children’s Hospital through Shaggy & Friends benefit concerts.
