Firefighters continue to battle Fork fire in Azusa amid high heat
Temperatures in the valleys could hit 100 degrees Sunday as firefighters continue to battle the Fork fire in Azusa. Fire crews on the ground say the heat is a concern as they continue to battle the fire burning just above Azusa and Glendora, which has scorched 330 acres. Two firefighters have been injured. It remains unclear what sparked the fire, which erupted Friday afternoon; however, there is a lot of dry brush in the mountains. The fire was 30 percent contained. No structures are threatened. Elsewhere, near Tujunga, the so-called La Tuna Fire has burned more than 40 acres and forced the closure of the 210 Freeway briefly. The fire was 90 percent contained. Fire crews are urging the public to exercise caution, especially in the mountains, as the heat and the low humidity could spark other fires.
Retired Teachers Association awards scholarships to local high school seniors
Scholarships totaled $18,900 and ranged in value from $700 to $2,500. – The scholarship committee and members of Division 86 of the California Retired Teachers Association hosted the 2024 Scholarship Tea on May 22 at the Paso Robles Culinary Arts Academy. Eighteen seniors from the five public high school districts in North San Luis Obispo County were honored with scholarships funded by members and valued sponsors of the scholarship program.
California secures federal assistance to support response to Hawarden Fire
SACRAMENTO – Working quickly to bring in additional funding and resources to help fight the rapidly burning Hawarden Fire, Governor Gavin Newsom today announced that California has secured a Fire Management Assistance Grant (FMAG) from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to help ensure the availability of vital resources to suppress the fire burning in Riverside County.
