Local graduate battles lymphoma with community support

GoFundMe page has raised over $27,000

– Bianca Rangel, a 2024 Paso Robles High School graduate, was recently diagnosed with stage 4-B Hodgkin’s lymphoma. A GoFundMe page has reached over $27,000 since July 30, with funds supporting the Rangel family with expenses for travel, medical, and other related costs.

“For months, Bianca has been experiencing strange symptoms that led her to multiple doctor visits. Despite these challenges, she remained committed to her roles and responsibilities, always putting others first,” said Sara Dobroth, who is the mother in law of Rangel’s sister, via the GoFundMe page.

Rangel started chemotherapy on Aug. 4 and is set to go through five rounds of chemotherapy until the end of November. She was accepted into the Sonography Program based in Los Angeles and will begin the program in January 2025.

After fainting spells due to the tumor in her chest, Rangel has been treated at Sierra Vista Medical Center, the Valley Children’s Hospital, and currently the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles. Over the past few weeks, she also fought COVID-19 and pneumonia.

Rangel’s family and loved ones have traveled across the country to support her. She was recently able to come home; she travels to the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles with her mother throughout the week for blood work monitoring.

“Bianca is not just any teenager; she is a beacon of hope and positivity in our community. She dedicates her days to giving back to the children of Paso Robles as a camp counselor, lifeguard, and swim instructor at the Paso Robles Sports Club,” said Dobroth via GoFundMe.

Rangel, who is 17 years old, was heavily involved during her high school career, including being senior class president, homecoming queen as a senior, and a member of the Superintendent Student Advisory Committee for two years. On the athletic side, she was on the cheerleading team and stunt team for all four years. She earned recognition for completing the Bearkitten Pathway and the State Seal of Biliteracy. Rangel also placed second at the SkillsUSA competition in early childhood education.
