Public Scoping for Hermosa Gets Underway
Coronado National Forest (FS) has begun work on an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the South32 Hermosa Critical Minerals Project. This EIS is required because South32 intends to expand mining on their private lands in the Patagonia Mountains into the public Coronado Forest. The EIS will outline the status of the environment in the affected area, provide a baseline for understanding the potential consequences of the proposed project, identify positive and negative effects for the environment, and offer alternative actions or inaction.
Memorial Day Events in Patagonia
The veterans of our small Town and remote area gave so much for our country. I feel a need to honor them every year on Memorial Day. This honor was historically done by local service groups, particularly our VFW. Over many years this group of veterans and their supporters aged until the local VFW had so few members that the group dissolved in 2015.

Wildlife are on the move! Check out this new video from our Wildlife Specialist Miguel Enríquez sharing some of the best photos submitted in April by our FotoFauna project. A little background for those who are new: FotoFauna is a growing network of 282 individuals and organizations in the Sky Islands, with wildlife cameras set up in the U.S. or Mexico. It’s easy to get started. Just set up a wildlife camera in your backyard and submit an online monthly checklist of species you observe. In addition to being fun and another way to form community, the data will help us study when and where wildlife is present so we can better protect their habitats.

The proposed project will impact surface disturbance on 480.5 acres, underground disturbance of 223 acres, and restricted access to 343.4 acres.
Ike Isakson to Retire as PVFR Chief
Chief Ike Isakson has announced his retirement as chief of the. . His last day as acting chief will be June 30. “It’s time to relieve some stress, not spend hours at the computer, and learn to relax a little, which I probably won’t be able to do, but I’ll try,” Isakson said this morning. “My heart attack a month ago was a wake-up call that’s it’s time. I will remain an active member of the PVFR, just without the stress of being chief.”
Supervisors Appoint New Treasurer
On May 7, 2024, the Santa Cruz County Board of Supervisors announced the appointment of Mr. Alejandro I. Paz as Santa Cruz County Treasurer. Mr. Paz was appointed to replace Ms. Elizabeth Gutfahr, who resigned from the position on April 12, 2024. The appointment is valid through December 31, 2024, and Mr. Paz will begin serving in his role on May 13, 2024.
