Local Business Competition to Support Sonoita Food Bank
“It’s a Throwdown. It’s a Block Party. It’s a Food Drive.“. Wineries and restaurants located in Arizona’s wine country are teaming up to collect much needed items to stock the shelves of the local food pantry this spring. Visitors are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items to participating locations between May 1 and May 18.
Choices
April did not disappoint. Between its solar eclipse and the return—after 71 years—of Comet 12P Pons-Brooks, it gave us all we could ask for. It made us all kids again and turned kids into teachers. It showed us a way forward, a way out and a way to simply let go, leaving it up to us to decide which way was best. April illuminated our choices.
Preserving a Final Resting Place
Headstones are the language of the dead. And they spoke to Molly McClure. Pearl Powell Holden, Victor P. Hanson, Mrs. Willie Downs Lavelle and Refugio Solano all made their presence known when McClure purchased Elgin acreage in 2002. What she didn’t know was the extent of the cemetery’s inhabitants. And how to protect them.
Let’s Talk Prevention
Not all fires can be prevented. Lightning strikes are a frequent source of ignition in our climate, and all we can do is fight those fires. Some fires, however, are preventable. Fire codes provide rules that even those of us in rural areas are expected to follow. The Firewise USA program provides information and guidance on how to protect your property. Let’s look at both.
Sun Worshipping Flora and Fauna
May in the Sky Islands generally ushers in our first truly hot temperatures for the year. Most lingering spring wildflowers have vanished, any remaining wintering birds fly the coop, and high elevation flora and fauna start to kick into gear. The soaring heat of this period heralds a decided uptick...
Lobos Come Up Short as Baseball Season Ends
The Patagonia High School baseball season concluded with a pair of back-to-back losses on the road: 17-12 to Ray on April 23 and 10-8 to Fort Thomas on April 24. The Lobos finished with a 1-15 record but had two of their better offensive performances in their final two games.
Flyovers and Electrical Shocks
Monitoring wildlife numbers in eastern Santa Cruz County and surrounding areas is an important part of the job for Britt Oleson, the local Wildlife Manager for the Arizona Game and Fish Dept. (AZGFD). This past January, Oleson spent seven days flying over sections of game management units 35A and 35B,...
(Getting Ready to Be) Gone Fishing
By all accounts, conditions are getting really good in our area bass lakes. Those that want to get out and sample some good to great largemouth bass and panfish action should start planning. Lower elevation lakes like Patagonia and to some extent, Arivaca, should be at the top of anglers’...

There’s Nothing to Eat
When Zach and I go to the grocery store it’s always the same. We buy the basics: milk, bread, cheese, meat and produce. The produce gets carefully placed in the clear empty drawer in the bottom of the fridge only to die a slow chilled death. The celery turns to rubber bands, the lettuce liquefies and those poor cucumbers shrink into a pickle. The chest freezer is full of frozen meat that we never remember to defrost. The cabinets are stuffed full of canned goods and sauces.
Town Council Notes – May 2024
The mayor and Council approved adopting the tentative budget for the fiscal year 2024-2025. Summer Smith was appointed as the Town of Patagonia’s Public Body Records Officer. A special event liquor license was approved for Community Homes of Patagonia (CHOP) for Friday, May 3. The event will run from...
Why the Hermosa Mine Should Not Go Forward
Borderlands Restoration Network’s (BRN) home is Patagonia. Today our organization is the second largest employer in town. We are very concerned about the threats large-scale industrial mining poses to our region and strongly oppose the development and operations of the Hermosa Mine in the Patagonia Mountains. As described in...
Lobos Serve Up Improved Tennis Season
When the Patagonia Lobos tennis teams reported for practice this spring they were welcomed by new nets, new uniforms and new LED lights on the courts, courtesy of the school administration. The Lobos responded with their best season in several years—with the boys team winning five of 10 matches (one...

Exploratory Drilling Continues in Patagonia Mountains
Two Forest Service-approved exploratory drilling projects in the Patagonia Mountains began onsite actions last fall. One is the Canadian exploratory company Barksdale Resources’ Sunnyside Exploration Project. The other is the Australian mining company South32’s Flux Canyon Exploration Project. Both projects lie within their owners’ unpatented claims in the Coronado National Forest (CNF) and both have drainage into Alum Gulch and Flux Canyon watersheds, which are mining-impaired tributaries of Sonoita Creek.
