Homicide Investigation Underway in Sonoita
Note: The PRT will update this story with new details as they become available. The Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call at 03:42 AM on October 5, 2023. The reporting party (Austin William Scheid, Date of Birth 08-24-2001) advised the Sheriff’s Office dispatcher that he had murdered two people at 25 Lucero Del Cielo in Sonoita, Arizona. Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched. Officers met Austin Scheid in a vehicle at an intersection near 25 Lucero Del Cielo. The vehicle was smeared with blood. A bloody knife and bloody clothing and footwear were also found in the vehicle. Austin Scheid was detained. Officers also responded to 25 Lucero Del Cielo and found one deceased male individual (Gregory Scheid, age 64) and one critically injured female (Jamie Lee Scheid, age 56). Gregory Scheid was identified to be Austin Scheid’s father and Jamie Scheid was identified to be Austin Scheid’s step-mother. Jamie Scheid was airlifted from the scene for medical treatment. Austin Scheid is being held in the Santa Cruz County Jail. Attached is a mugshot of defendant Austin Scheid.
ADOT Slams Local Winery with Truck/Trailer Violations
On Wednesday, September 6, 2023, ADOT pulled over and inspected a number of trucks and trailers near the intersection of SR 82 and SR 83, including a truck and trailer from Dos Cabezas Winery in Sonoita that was headed to Kansas Settlement. The truck was to pick up wine grapes and bring them to their winery for processing in Sonoita. Over 12 citations were documented. The trailer cannot be used until all corrections are made, and the winery has had to use a smaller trailer with half the capacity requiring more trips, fuel costs, and more time to haul the fruit and get it processed. They were told if ADOT pulled them over and found out corrections were not accomplished, they could be fined $5,000 or more.

Patagonia Clinic Welcomes New Doc
On Thursday afternoon, Sept. 7, the Patagonia community had a meet-and-greet opportunity to say hello to the new Mariposa Community Health Care physician, Dr. Ricardo Reyes. Traditional stethoscope around his neck, Reyes circulated inside and outside the café, affably working the crowd like a handshaking politician. The difference is that Reyes was seeking to promote health, not garner votes. About half a dozen Mariposa staff were there also, including the medical director and assistant medical director.
Ruling on Exploratory Drilling Permits Appealed
On Friday, August 24, 2023, a hearing was held on a Motion for Injunction by PARA along with seven conservation organizations in a lawsuit against the Forest Service for issuing exploratory permits to Arizona Standard (a US corporation wholly owned by Canadian exploratory company Barksdale Resources) for the Sunnyside Project, and to Arizona Minerals (a US corporation wholly owned by Australian mining company South32). At the conclusion of the hearing, the judge stated that she would take the documents and evidence under advisement and issue her decision shortly.
