Vets to Be Honored at Patagonia Cemetery on Memorial Day

SEFD Board Looks at 2023-2024 Budget Proposal
Sonoita-Elgin Fire District Chief Marc Meredith presented the 2033-2024 budget for the station to the SEFD Board of Directors on May 15. The $1,660,212 budget, which reflected an increase of $108,004 in expenses over last year’s budget, will not result in an increase in the district’s tax rate, which will remain at 2.72 percent.

Glimpses Into Our Past: Charles Mapes
The scrapbook titled “Pioneer Park Names of Pioneers and Donors of Trees” is dedicated to Charles J. Mapes. The unsigned dedication statement states, “He was the first person in Patagonia that was ecology-minded. He planted walnut trees on the street where he lived.” His Patagonia address in the 1950 U.S. Census was 371 Pennsylvania Avenue; in 1940 he was living on Naugle.
Aerial Acts in Thurber Hall?
Harold Thurber, a prominent rancher near Sonoita, started fundraising in 1953 for a hall to be added to the Patagonia Community Church “for the use of all children of the community regardless of race, creed or color.” He never gave up on the fundraising, and it took six years with donors from as far away as Tucson, before construction of the Community Hall and Youth Center finally started in 1959.
Spotlight on PRT Press Core: Gail Christmann
Gail Christmann and her husband, John, moved to Sonoita during the pandemic in 2020 from New Paltz, New York. Her husband traveled around the west and southwest searching for an area that was warm where they might relocate. By chance John met a long-time Sonoita resident on an airplane flight who suggested the family check out the area. They came, found a house and Gail, her husband, and her 95-year-old mom, Marion Gauthier, moved to Sonoita.
Check It Out at the Library – May 2023
Every so often, a group of middle schoolers and their teachers will come visit the library before our opening hours to have a full hour of undivided attention and assistance from the library staff. As hectic as these mornings can be, I love having the chance to get to know the kids, understand what they’re looking for, and showing them that the library is here to help however we can.
What Is That? Curios From the Patagonia Museum — May 2023
The Santa Cruz County Seal and a few cowbells are from the George Proctor Collection at the museum. Proctor served as Santa Cruz County Supervisor from 1980 to 1984 after retiring from the U.S. Forest Service in 1976. The use of cowbells, which were tied around the livestock’s neck to keep track of the animal, dates back 5,000 years.
