Lobos Come Up Short as Baseball Season Ends
The Patagonia High School baseball season concluded with a pair of back-to-back losses on the road: 17-12 to Ray on April 23 and 10-8 to Fort Thomas on April 24. The Lobos finished with a 1-15 record but had two of their better offensive performances in their final two games.
Flyovers and Electrical Shocks
Monitoring wildlife numbers in eastern Santa Cruz County and surrounding areas is an important part of the job for Britt Oleson, the local Wildlife Manager for the Arizona Game and Fish Dept. (AZGFD). This past January, Oleson spent seven days flying over sections of game management units 35A and 35B,...
Opening Up
Ever since I started rockhounding I have wanted to find the elusive geode. I’ve seen geodes in the gem and mineral collections of museums, cut open and displayed on fine black velvet with single source dramatic lighting, looking for all the world like a secret place that existed, hollow, with its own aesthetic rules.
When Baseball Was the Only Game in Town
Consider, for a moment, the greatest baseball player to ever represent the town of Patagonia. Seventeen seasons in the major leagues. Two hundred and fifty-two career home runs. Five appearances in the Major League All-Star Game. That would be the late Bobby Murcer. The same Bobby Murcer who starred for...

There’s Nothing to Eat
When Zach and I go to the grocery store it’s always the same. We buy the basics: milk, bread, cheese, meat and produce. The produce gets carefully placed in the clear empty drawer in the bottom of the fridge only to die a slow chilled death. The celery turns to rubber bands, the lettuce liquefies and those poor cucumbers shrink into a pickle. The chest freezer is full of frozen meat that we never remember to defrost. The cabinets are stuffed full of canned goods and sauces.
Town Council Notes – May 2024
The mayor and Council approved adopting the tentative budget for the fiscal year 2024-2025. Summer Smith was appointed as the Town of Patagonia’s Public Body Records Officer. A special event liquor license was approved for Community Homes of Patagonia (CHOP) for Friday, May 3. The event will run from...
Why the Hermosa Mine Should Not Go Forward
Borderlands Restoration Network’s (BRN) home is Patagonia. Today our organization is the second largest employer in town. We are very concerned about the threats large-scale industrial mining poses to our region and strongly oppose the development and operations of the Hermosa Mine in the Patagonia Mountains. As described in...
Lobos Serve Up Improved Tennis Season
When the Patagonia Lobos tennis teams reported for practice this spring they were welcomed by new nets, new uniforms and new LED lights on the courts, courtesy of the school administration. The Lobos responded with their best season in several years—with the boys team winning five of 10 matches (one...

Exploratory Drilling Continues in Patagonia Mountains
Two Forest Service-approved exploratory drilling projects in the Patagonia Mountains began onsite actions last fall. One is the Canadian exploratory company Barksdale Resources’ Sunnyside Exploration Project. The other is the Australian mining company South32’s Flux Canyon Exploration Project. Both projects lie within their owners’ unpatented claims in the Coronado National Forest (CNF) and both have drainage into Alum Gulch and Flux Canyon watersheds, which are mining-impaired tributaries of Sonoita Creek.
County Updates Residents on South32 Road Permit Process
Residents of Red Rock Acres said they got some good news and some bad news at an April 10 meeting held by Santa Cruz County government officials regarding construction of the Cross Creek Connector (CCC) road outside of Patagonia. The CCC is being constructed by South32 (S32) to run from...
New Street Piano a ‘No Excuses’ Gift to Town
Maybe you’ve always wanted to have fun trying to one-finger play Garth Brooks or Taylor Swift tunes on the piano, or maybe you’ve always wanted to become a concert pianist. But you didn’t have a piano. “Now you have no excuse!” proclaimed Christina Wilhelm, with a wink.
County, Patagonia Frustrated by Hermosa NEPA Timetable
Ignoring written objections from the governments of Santa Cruz County and the Town of Patagonia, the US Forest Service—the federal agency charged with leading the NEPA permitting process for South32’s controversial Hermosa project—is opening a 30-day scoping period on May 10. Both the County and the Town...
Garden Guides: War of the Roses
Whether or not to plant roses in your garden can be as divisive as today’s political climate. What a shame! If a rose would bring you joy, then plant one. A rose is nothing but a flowering woody shrub and takes a similar amount of care and water as any other flowering woody shrub.
What Is That?? – May 2024
Many museum visitors ask what this long string of white ovals is. If you shake them, you get a clue: it sounds like a snake’s rattle. The Yaqui tribe in Mexico and Arizona wind them around their legs to produce this amazing sound when they perform their Deer Dance. They are said to be made of cocoons.
