PATERSON, NJ - The Paterson Public Schools community gathered at the historic Hinchliffe Stadium on Thursday to celebrate the graduation of the Class of 2024 from Eastside High School, Rosa L. Parks School of Fine & Performing Arts, Paterson P-TECH High School, Paterson STEAM High School, and the STARS Academy/STARS T.I.E.S. Program.

"Today's ceremony is about celebrating your significant achievement - which is graduating from high school and, after several long years of hard work and commitment to your education, earning your diploma," Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Laurie Newell said. 'Let me take this opportunity to say, on behalf of everyone present, congratulations. We are so proud of you!"

The ceremony included heartfelt speeches from valedictorians of each school, reflecting on their unique journeys and sharing words of wisdom for their fellow graduates.

Adriana Bonilla, Valedictorian of STARS Academy, expressed her gratitude and excitement. "Today marks the end of a long journey full of memories and emotions. We have faced many challenges and have grown so much," she said, thanking families, friends, and staff for their support.

Leonna Morris, the valedictorian of STEAM High School, reflected on her upbringing in Jamaica and how it taught her the value of hard work and perseverance as well as lessons that continued after she and her father immigrated to America. Despite challenges like the global pandemic, the class persevered, she said. Morris encouraged her fellow graduates to bloom where they are planted and to use the values instilled in them to make a positive impact.

Rashel Medina, Valedictorian of Rosa L. Parks School of Fine and Performing Arts, shared her personal journey and the importance of perseverance. Last year, as she prepared for her graduation speech, she sought guidance from her counselor, Ms. Clifford, who advised her to reflect on who she was. This prompted her to recall her arrival in the U.S. as a shy girl from the Dominican Republic who didn't speak English and struggled academically. With the support of mentors and teachers, she learned the value of education and resilience. "These experiences led me to realize that, as Mandy Hale once said, 'Sometimes, when you lose your way, you find yourself.' Failure is not only necessary for success but also for learning to appreciate it."

She encouraged her peers to embrace the future with enthusiasm, reminding them of the challenges and growth they have experienced together. Santana also thanked her family and teachers for their unwavering support, urging everyone to work hard, enjoy life, and strive to make a positive impact on the world.

"My journey at Paterson P-TECH has been filled with treasured experiences, from hallway conversations to classrooms buzzing with curiosity," Thaddeus Chestnut , Valedictorian of Paterson P-TECH said. "The friendships, lessons, and support have taught me the invaluable lesson that a supportive community can propel a student beyond their limitations. As the valedictorian, I stand here knowing I wouldn't be in this position without many of you. To the Class of 2024, remember that our unity and commitment to the community are our strengths. Despite facing pandemics and global challenges, we have persevered. Now, let's inspire others as we continue our journey."

The ceremony concluded with a message of encouragement from Superintendent Newell. "Embrace life's challenges, learn from your mistakes, and enjoy the journey."
