    Paterson City Council Members Sworn In for Another Term

    PATERSON, NJ - Six members of the Paterson City Council took their oaths for another term on Monday. The returning council members include First Ward Councilman Mike Jackson, Second Ward Councilman Shahin Khalique, Third Ward Councilman Alex Mendez, Fourth Ward Councilwoman Ruby Cotton, Fifth Ward Councilman Luis Velez, and Sixth Ward Councilman Al Abdelaziz.

    Jackson thanked his constituents for their steadfast support and vowed to address issues that most impact his consituents.

    "Our communities face challenges like unfair housing and lack of employment," he said. "I will never stand by and watch such injustices. Thank you to the First Ward for your support. The fight for fair opportunities continues, ensuring home ownership becomes a reality and fair housing is prioritized."

    Cotton, re-elected for her fourth term, reiterated her commitment to community service and emphasized the importance of teamwork among council members in achieving meaningful change. "Working together, we will make a difference," she said. Cotton highlighted her efforts in enhancing public safety and supporting local residents with essential services.

    Velez expressed his gratitude to supporters and reflected on his journey in public service, including his tenure on the Paterson Board of Education.

    "I want to thank God and express gratitude to everyone who supported me," he said. He also emphasized the need for unity and progress in Paterson, honoring those who have paved the way and pledging inclusive leadership for all residents. Velez concluded with gratitude to his colleagues, his wife, and his team, affirming his dedication to serving with true leadership and love for the community.

    "I am deeply grateful to the administration, elected and appointed officials, and the people of Paterson for their support today," Khalique said. "I appreciate the steadfast support of my siblings, nieces, nephews, and extended family. To the Second Ward residents who have entrusted me with a third term, thank you. Your support drives me to tirelessly serve our community, fostering unity and ensuring a brighter future for all. I extend heartfelt thanks to [the] Mayor, council colleagues, and especially Council President Mendez, Councilwoman Davila, and Councilman Al Abdelaziz for their endorsement. Let's continue working together, prioritizing cooperation and effective governance for Paterson's progress."

    Mendez expressed deep gratitude for the support from his colleagues, residents of the Third Ward, and his family during his address. He emphasized his commitment to advancing Paterson's future, highlighting the city's role in his personal success and his determination to give back. Mendez credited his passion for the city's improvement to its pivotal role in his life, from personal success to family and business achievements.     6th Ward Councilman Abdelaziz concluded with appreciation for his constituents and outlined priorities for his upcoming term, focusing on quality of life improvements, public safety initiatives, and expanding parks.

    "I want to thank my family, colleagues, mentors, and the residents of the sixth ward for their unwavering support," he said. "Your trust and accountability drive me to serve diligently. Looking ahead, we'll focus on quality of life, public safety, and park expansion. Together, we'll achieve success and improve our city. Let's get things done."
