PATERSON, NJ - The Paterson Police Department (PPD) recorded 1,681 arrests during the first half of 2024, marking an increase from 1,321 in 2023 and 1,431 in 2022 during the same period, law enforc announced.
The most substantial surge was observed in warrant arrests, showing a 415% increase from the previous year and a 1,330% increase compared to 2022. Arrests for second-degree distribution of heroin or cocaine rose by 136% from 2023 and 55% from 2022. Additionally, there was a 62% increase in simple assault arrests from 2023 and a 51% increase from 2022, while aggravated assault with a weapon arrests climbed by 31% from 2023 and 84% from 2022.
The driving force behind these increases, officials say, is enhanced information sharing and briefing initiatives within the department. Patrol officers now receive detailed intelligence packets during roll calls, containing crucial information about wanted suspects, maps highlighting areas of heightened violence, and insights into individuals perpetrating crime throughout the city. Investigators also provide briefings to patrol officers on crime trends and violent individuals, empowering officers with the knowledge needed to make proactive arrests.
“At the Paterson Police Department, we are fostering a culture of information sharing across all operational units," Officer in Charge Isa Abbassi said. "By equipping our officers with timely and pertinent intelligence, we enable them to identify and apprehend wanted suspects effectively.” Abbassi added, “Our focus is on precision policing and addressing the root causes of violence in our community. Increased arrests are a testament to our enhanced approach, ensuring that those who threaten public safety are swiftly brought to justice.”
PPD has also implemented regular meetings involving executive staff to collectively address public safety challenges. These meetings, officials, serve as platforms to discuss crime trends, tactics, and strategic information-sharing strategies, fostering collaboration among all divisions of the department toward the shared goal of a safer Paterson.
