PATERSON, NJ - Third Ward Councilman Alex Mendez was re-elected as Council President, while Sixth Ward Councilman Al Abdelaziz was elected as Vice President on Monday.
Fifth Ward Councilman Luis Velez, the former Vice President, voted in opposition to both the President and Vice President nominations.
"Last year, Councilman Mendez asked me to be Council President for this year, and assured me he wouldn't run for the office," Velez said. "But things changed."
First Ward Councilman Mike Jackson, who also voted in opposition, voiced frustrations over what he perceived as broken promises and political maneuvering.
"They make promises all the time," Jackson said, citing issues with development deals and property transactions and accusing the administration of unethical practices. Jackson lamented the lack of progress and transparency, pointing out specific grievances like the handling of housing initiatives and tax exemptions. He also emphasized the need for accountability and factual discussion within the council, urging colleagues and the public to scrutinize the city's actions more closely.
Despite the discord, the council proceeded with its leadership appointments, swearing Mendez and Abdelaziz into the top two positions.
"Thank you to all my colleagues from the bottom of my heart for your support last year," Mendez said. "We made tremendous progress under strong leadership from the Council President and leadership team. Moving forward, I aim to bring unity and respect to our chamber. I look forward to collaborating with each of you as a team player committed to advancing our city in the right direction. Together, let's make thoughtful decisions that benefit our community."
"Thank you once again, and let's keep progressing towards a brighter future for Paterson."
