PATERSON, NJ - An emergency contract worth $168,700 with ABM Building & Energy Solutions has been approved by the Paterson City Council to replace the malfunctioning rooftop air conditioning unit at City Hall.
City officials highlighted the pressing nature of the issue, emphasizing that the existing air conditioning unit, which has been out of commission, posed significant health and safety risks, especially with warmer temperatures approaching. The new unit will not only provide air conditioning but also heating, addressing both climate control needs throughout the year.
The replacement process will involve the use of cranes to remove the old unit and install the new one. This step is essential to assess the condition of the roof and the air conditioning system's related components,” DPW Director Billy Rodriguez said. The replacement unit is a 25-ton system, which will enhance the building’s climate management capabilities.
"This emergency replacement is critical for maintaining a safe and functional environment at City Hall,” Council President Alex Mendez said. “With the old unit malfunctioning, it was essential to act swiftly to prevent further complications."
Mendez added, "We’re investing in not just a new air conditioning unit, but also in the overall condition of our City Hall. While this is a necessary step, we must also keep pushing for broader renovations to ensure our facilities meet all of our needs. As we move forward with this replacement, we should also consider other necessary upgrades within City Hall. It’s an opportunity to improve our facilities, such as upgrading the bathrooms and improving office conditions, to ensure a conducive work environment for city employees, comprehensively."
City officials noted that the removal and replacement process will also include evaluating the roof and ceiling chambers for necessary repairs, ensuring comprehensive maintenance.
The installation is expected to take between 10 and 12 weeks, with completion aimed for late October or early November, depending on delivery and installation schedules.
