A new large wildfire sent smoke and ash into Moscow and Pullman Monday afternoon. The Lower Granite Fire broke out miles away across the Snake River in Garfield County North of Pomeroy around 11:30 Monday morning. The blaze grew quickly in strong winds which keep the smoke and ash low to the ground and push it all the way to Moscow and Pullman. The blaze has torched about 2,000 acres and did push East into the Snake River Canyon on the Garfield County side. It burned in the canyon across the river from Wawawai Landing and Granite Point in Whitman County. The blaze has been state mobilized which will bring in firefighters from other parts of Washington to fight the flames. Firefighters on the ground from Garfield County and nearby Asotin County fought the fire with assistance from aircraft attacking from the sky. Rain late Monday afternoon helped slow the spread of the fire. Evacuation orders for North Garfield County have been lifted. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
